"Nespresso Espresso Machines; Delivering the ultimate coffee experience…"

Nespresso began developing their own espresso machines in the 1970’s, when it became clear that customers wanted to make their own espresso and specialty coffee at home. Their unique capsule machines take all of the guesswork out of making coffee. Just pop a capsule in the machine and brew an excellent espresso with rich, creamy coffee flavor. Each of these machines exclusively use Nespresso capsules, which must be purchased through Nespresso.

Single-Serve Coffee Cups and Capsules Go Eco-Friendly

Ask the experts and many of them will tell you the same thing: the single-serve coffee category is hotter than freshly brewed java. Fueled by convenience, the time-saving system that lets users prepare drinks by the cup is gaining popularity worldwide. Yet, since their inception, single-serve cups and capsules have had to dodge the criticism that they’re inherently bad for the environment.

Since single-serve capsules are discarded after each use, the brewing method is not as green as preparing drinks with ground coffee or espresso. And, we’re talking about a lot of cups and capsules. According to the National Coffee Association, single-serve coffee is the fastest-growing sector of the home market, as well as the second most popular brewing method after conventional drip coffee makers.

So, what’s an environmentally conscious coffee lover to do? Must eco-concerns be set aside in favor of fast, convenient, and reliable drinks by the cup? Fortunately, leading single-serve manufacturers are addressing the issue head on. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), the maker of K-Cups for Keurig, conducted a life cycle analysis to assess the environmental impact of its single-serve packs. Highlights of the study are as follows:

  • "The most significant environmental impacts are associated with materials production/packaging, the use phase, and the coffee cultivation phase for the impact categories examined."
  • "End-of-Life (EoL) is a small part of the K-Cup® pack life cycle, representing only 5% of GHG emissions. EoL represents only 1% of the energy demand, and 1% of the acidification potential."
  • "The K-Cup® brewing system uses less energy in an office environment than a traditional batch brewing system. This translates into reduced environmental impact in all impact categories over the entire life cycle."

According to the study, even though the end-of-life cycle -- when a K-Cup is used and discarded -- is the most visible, it actually only accounts for only 5% of the potential global warming output. Nevertheless, GMCR has put together a program to allow workplace customers in the contiguous U.S. to collect and return spent K-Cups for composting and energy from waste processing. The Grounds to Grow On program is estimated to have recovered 4.1 million K-Cup packs and composted over 85,000 pounds of ground coffee in the same year. The plastic from spent K-Cups saved approximately 139 kilowatt hours.

Want to take matters into your own hands, give the Keurig My K-Cup filter basket a try. It is a reusable filter that lets you brew with any ground pre-ground coffee you choose. No hassle, no mess, and no waste.

At Nespresso, the talk centers around recycling as well as developing more sustainable aluminum for their single-serve capsules. In the U.S., the company has capsule collection systems in place in cities with Nespresso boutiques including: New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Nespresso has also launched the AluCycle, partnering with mining, refining, retrieval, recycling organizations to improve the sustainability of aluminum. The company has also teamed up with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to promote environmentally sound aluminum practices.

Taking its commitment one step further, Nespresso has equipped some of its single-serve machines with an ECO button, which will automatically turn the machine off after 30 minutes of inactivity to conserve energy. The feature is available on the latest generation of the CitiZ machines. As an added bonus, purchase any Nespresso single-serve machine over $199 from now until June 17, 2013 and you can register for a $50 Nespresso Club credit good for free capsules.

Illy iperEspresso fans can take heart in knowing that their capsules are made from recycled plastic. The company is working on a method to allow consumers to open, clean, and recycle their capsules.

While single-serve systems may not be as eco-friendly as other more traditional brewing methods, the leading manufacturers are taking notes and continually making improvements to their products. Don’t write them off just yet.

World production for 2012 includes 88,818 bags of Arabica and 62,440 of Robusta.

Caribbean countries produce 920 bags of Arabica from: Cuba (125), Dominican Republic (475), Haiti (300) and Jamaica (20).

Peruvian farmers haul bags of coffee from small farms on mountaain slopes to gathering points for sale to Coyotes.

Middle East coffee comes from Yemen at 150 bags of Arabica.

Papua New Guinea, 1,100 bags of Arabica and 50 bags of Robusta, represents Oceania’s total production.

South Asia contributes 1,650 bags of Arabica and 3,685 bags of Robusta from: India (1,640/3,660) and Sri Lanka (10/25).

Nespress Citiz

What I Like:

-Looks/ Styling

The Nespresso Citiz machine has a great look to it. Modern looks combined with an easy to use capsule system make this machine a great choice for any kitchen. I really like the looks of the machine, it almost has a retro/ classic look to it.

-Ready lights/ Brew Buttons

This machine features two programmable brew buttons which flash until the machine is up to temperature. This is a great feature to have because you will know when the machine is ready to brew. When the lights become solid all you will need to do is place the capsule into the machine and press the brew button.

-Programmable Brewing buttons

The Citiz machine features two programmable brewing buttons. This is a great feature which allows you to customize your shot of espresso. I found that for the best results I set one button for a double shot at about 2 ounces and the other for the lungo capsule at about 4.5 ounces.

-Adjustable Cup Tray

This machine accommodates a larger or smaller cup by folding it up or down. The machine will hold up to a 6 inch cup.

-Capsule holder

The Citiz machine has a large dredge drawer for catching the used capsules. I found that it holds about 10 spent capsules give or take depending on how they fall. It is very easy is remove the tray to dump the spent capsules and to clean.

What I would Change

-Frother

There are two Nespresso Citiz units. One unit comes with an Aeroccino which allows you to froth milk . The other comes with just the espresso machine. It would be nice if there was a way to froth milk without purchasing the combo unit.

-Brewing ability

Because the Citiz is a capsule machine it takes several extra steps to get a full sized cup of coffee. You would have to use the lungo capsule and use 2 of them to get about a 10 ounce cup of coffee. It would be nice if they made larger lungo capsule so that you would only have to use one per cup.

Recommended Environment

I would recommend this machine to anyone who is looking for a convenient way of brewing espresso. Nespresso offers 16 different capsules varieties so that you never have to settle with one type of coffee. The capsule system does a good job with minimal mess. This machine would make a great fit for anyone who is looking for an easy to use machine. The Citiz would make a great addition to any home or office.

The Small, But Mighty Nespresso Pixie

It wasn't pixie dust, but ingenuity and technological know-how that brought one of the world's smallest single-serve machines to our doorstep. The itty-bitty Nespresso Pixie is about eight capsules tall and as wide as the length of the average spoon. At only 6.5 pounds, the Pixie weighs less than most newborns. Think of it as the Thumbelina of the espresso world. The Pixie can fit in almost any nook and cranny; you can park it at home or your cubicle and kiss burnt office coffee goodbye. It's even available in 6 vibrant colors to suit your personal preferences and décor.

Lest you think otherwise, the Pixie doesn't just rest of its good-looking, space-saving laurels. Equipped with a thermoblock boiler that could, this single-serve espresso machine posts record-breaking warm-up times. On average, it takes the Pixie only 25 seconds to go from a cold start to ideal brewing temp. This means you can turn the machine on and prepare a fresh beverage in less than 60 seconds. You'll be able to brew a great shot and make it to the next department meeting with plenty of time to spare.

Nespresso CapsulesThe Capsules
The single-serve Pixie uses proprietary Nespresso capsules to prepare your drinks. This is something worth keeping in mind, if you're interested in purchasing not just the Pixie but any Nespresso single-serve machine. Nespresso capsules are available exclusively through the Nespresso Club and are not sold through Whole Latte Love or any other retailer. There are 16 Grand Cru capsules to choose from, ranging from ristretto to espresso, regular, decaf and café lungo varieties. Ground coffee is sealed within the aluminum-coated capsules to protect against air and light exposure and guard against oxidation, flavor and aroma loss. By any standard, the Nespresso capsules and brewing system are some of the best in the industry.

Brewing
Inserting a CapsuleThe Pixie can accommodate all Nespresso capsules. Shot volume is programmable; you can opt to brew one, two or three-ounce espressos to suit your preferences. Even for the uninitiated, the Nespresso Pixie is easy to use. Simply insert a capsule of your choice and press the single or double-shot button. The Pixie will brew and dispense fresh espresso directly into your cup. Spent capsules are automatically discarded into the capsule container, which is capable of holding approximately 10 capsules.

If you want to brew into an espresso cup, leave the cup tray down; otherwise, the cup tray can be pushed up and out of place to allow you to accommodate a tall glass (up to 5.5" inches). The Pixie is also exceedingly energy efficient. It'll let you go green by using 40% less energy than comparable single-serve machines. Nespresso will even get you started on the right foot with 16 free capsules. If you've been waiting for a small, easy-to-use single-serve espresso machine, the Nespresso Pixie is just what the doctor ordered.

Here's your chance to catch up on the latest lineup of unique, strange and utterly unbelievable espresso machines. While I can't speak for their brewing and frothing capabilities, these machines will definitely stand out in the crowd.

Earthy Espresso
While most espresso machines are made of ABS plastic or stainless steel, the Linje espresso maker prototype features a wooden frame. Created by three Norwegian design students, this earthy espresso machine is said to represent a "Nordic approach to coffee." The Linje is made of 1.5cm thick planks of Populus wood—which includes poplar, aspen and cottonwood species—layered together to create the machine's shape.

TuvieFour-Legged Espresso
Israeli Designer Dror Goldblum's concept Nespresso machine may have taken a few cues from man's best friend. Standing on all fours, this espresso maker has a cylinder-shaped body that houses a water reservoir and accommodates single-serve capsules. Dubbed the "Espresso on Four Legs," this machine has a minimalist design that is also evident in its controls. There are only two buttons to choose from, one for a single and the other for double espresso.

VespeoVespeo Espresso
What do you get when you cross a scooter and an espresso machine? The Vespeo Espresso Machine, of course. Created by German industrial designer Stefan Radev, the Vespeo has a unique display that bears a striking resemblance to a speedometer. This intelligent espresso machine will actually give you the proper water, coffee and steam ratio for your beverages.

These are the latest and greatest concept espresso machines to make their debut. Which one would you most like to have on your kitchen counter? If you've encountered an out-of-this world espresso machine, feel free to share; post a comment below.
