I just purchased the Gaggia Titanium (replaced Gaggia Symphony) and, when talking to customer service regarding an error message I was receiving about there being no bean in the hopper -- even though it was full -- I was told that the type of coffee beans I use may cause problems. I was told that dark roast beans (some of which are oily) should not be used. But this is an espresso machine and espresso beans tend to be dark roast! Can someone assist me in telling me what types of beans I cannot use with this machine? I had no such problems with the Symphony, so I'm not terribly pleased with this development.

techkathy Oily beans can get stuck in 2 different places in the machine. The first place they can get caught up is the hopper. There is a small black finger guard at the bottom of the bean hopper. Oily beans tend to stick together and cause bridging at this place in the hopper. The other place is the chute that leads from the hopper to the front of the machine where the brew group is located. When the beans are ground the oil from the surface of the beans is mixed in with the ground coffee. It will clog the chute and cause the machine to give the error message of no beans. As the hopper and chute become seasoned with coffee it will pass the beans much easier. But until then you should use a bean with a drier surface. You can also use fewer beans in the hopper to prevent bridging at the small guard.
