I was cleaning my Rancillo Silvia using the blind diaphragm doing the 5 seconds on 10 off cycle and noticed that when I turned the brew switch off water released into the discharge drawer from the covering behind the brew basket steam wand etc. When using the blind diaphragm there was quite a bit of water. If I removed he diaphragm the water reduced to several drops. is this normal. My machine is 3 months old, This is the first time I noticed this as I had the drip tray removed.

I have a rancilio silvia, and rocky grinder for two weeks. My espresso is delicious, nice thick crema, etc. Here is my question, folowing the golden rule on a double or single shot, my extracted espresso comes out of the portafilter dark brown for only 10 seconds then turns the colar of dark honey and continues to lighten. The extraction time is between 20-20 secs. Should my extracted brew be dark brown from beginning to end? I have changes tamp pressure and grind. Now grind is set to 8.

techkathy Don,
For descaling, you should use a product that is specifically and only for coffeemakers and/or espresso machines. We carry Cleancaf by Urnex. It is inexpensive and turns blue in water for an indicator. Cafiza is great for removing coffee from your filter screens and other metal components such as the portafilter and baskets.
