The 3-way solenoid valve is an electromechanical valve that allows water flow to be directed according to a given switch position. On the Gaggia semi-automatic machines (Classic and Baby) it would allow for water to flow to the group head in the brewing position and pressure relief from the portafilter when the brew switch is turned off.
