If your machine is starting to leak around the group head during brewing, your gasket may need replacing. First, make sure that you are not filling your filter basket too full, causing the portafilter to not properly align. To check, simply look for an indention in the dispersion screen after brewing. If you do not see an indention, then you will need to change your gasket. Commercial grade espresso machines group head gaskets should be replaced at least once a year.

remember the year I acquired it. I think the old gasket is
somewhat difficult to remove. I used to use a flat, small
screwdriver, but had difficulty prying the old gasket...

Help! There is no "beveled edge" on my new gasket...and which way is "up"? Up towards the inside of the machine...as in towards the ceiling, or "up" as in facing where the group head will come in contact with the gasket? Thanks!
