Capresso Espresso Pro vs. Classic Luxe

questions and answersAnswer

These 2 machines are very similar, and thanks to their pressurized style portafilters, both are an excellent choice for the budding barista. The main difference between them is the frothing attachments they come with. The Classic Luxe includes the Dual Frother Plus, which requires that you froth and steam your milk manually, but has a frothing "aid" that makes it pretty easy to do. On the other hand, the Espresso Pro comes with an auto-frothing attachment. This mechanism sucks milk from an external container, froths or steams it for you, and then drops it directly into your cup, so there’s no work involved. Your decision will basically come down to whether you want to create the frothed and steamed milk or let the machine do it for you.

questions and answersQuestion

Can you remove the Dual Frother to have a standard wand?

questions and answersAnswer

There isn’t a plain stainless nozzle underneath the Dual Frother, so although you an remove it for cleaning, etc., what you’re looking for won’t be there. Keep in mind though, that the Dual Frother isn’t an auto-frothing attachment. It’s simply a frothing aid that makes it easier to create steamed and frothed milk manually.

questions and answersQuestion

Do you need to prime the pump every time?

questions and answersAnswer

Although you will have to prime the pump when you set up the machine for the first time, you will not need to for each additional use. The machine will automatically draw water into the boiler after the initial set-up. However, it is always a good idea to run a "blank shot" prior to brewing to ensure that the group head and portafilter are fully heated. To do this, you simply attach the portafiter to the machine without coffee in it and press the brew button to pull hot water all the way through and heat the external components.

questions and answersQuestion

Does this machine have a reservoir?

questions and answersAnswer

The Espresso Classic Luxe has a 40 oz internal reservoir that will need to be refilled. It does not have the ability to be plumbed to a water line. Information like this can be found for any of the espresso machines we carry by following the link below to our Compare-O-Matic.

How do you clean this machine?

questions and answersAnswer

In order to clean out calcium deposits that settle in the internal portions of the machine, you will need to descale (decalcify) your machine. This will require that you purchase a descaling solution such as Urnex Cleancaf. You can learn more about Cleancaf and descaling by following the links below.

    questions and answersQuestion

Will this machine make espresso, cappuccino, and latte?

    questions and answersAnswer

Any of the espresso machines we carry (including the Espresso Classic Luxe) are capable of making espresso, cappuccino, and latte with no problem. In fact, the base for cappuccinos and lattes is espresso. To make a cappuccino, you would brew a double shot of espresso and add 3oz of steamed milk and 3 oz of frothed milk. For a latte, you would brew a double shot and add 6 oz of steamed milk. You can froth and steam milk using the steam/frothing wand that is found on every espresso machine. This machine would be able to complete these tasks easily, and will work very well for you. You can learn more about the types of drinks that you can make with an espresso machine by following the link below.

    questions and answersQuestion

Do I only have to use espresso beans, or can I use regular ones too?

    questions and answersAnswer

Truly, there is no such thing as an "espresso bean". You can use any bean when you brew espresso, however because espresso is pressure brewed (unlike drip coffee, french press, etc), it tends to bring foward different flavor profiles for a bean than it may with another brewing method, so some beans may not perform as well as others with the pressure brewing process. Generally, beans that are roasted with the specific intent of being used for espresso perform the best, but other beans can produce a very flavorful brew as well. You should definitely feel free to experiment to find the beans you enjoy the most.

    questions and answersQuestion

    What is a brew group?

    questions and answersAnswer

The brew group is basically the portion of the machine that hot water runs through before it meets the ground coffee. The exit point of the water from the brew group is what’s called the group head (located above where the portafilter locks into place), which has a shower screen attached to it. This is the main piece you’ll need to clean. First off, when you remove the portafilter after brewing, you will want to pull a little more water through this area (by pressing the brew button on and off quickly) to remove any excess grounds that may be stuck to it. In addition, you’ll probably want to use a group brush (which can be purchased on our site by following the link below) to scrub it fairly regularly. Every couple of months or so, you’ll also want to remove the shower screen by removing the screw that holds it into place and scrub/soak it in a cleaning solution like Urnex Cafiza (you can learn more about this product by clicking the link below). These steps should help keep your shower screen clog free and your coffee tasting great.

    questions and answersQuestion

What do I need to make espresso with this machine?

    questions and answersAnswer

To make espresso with this machine, you will need to fill the reservoir with water, and place ground coffee into the portafilter. You can either use preground coffee (like our Lavazza Blu or Illy Fine Grind), or grind your own beans with a grinder like the Capresso Infinity Burr grinder.  Then you will attach the portafilter to the machine and brew using the brewing button on the machine. If you would like to make a cappuccino or latte, you will need to steam or froth milk using the steam wand on the machine.  For this, I would recommend purchasing a frothing pitcher to froth the milk in and a frothing thermometer so that you can be sure you’re not burning or scalding the milk.  You may also want to add flavorings like the Monin syrups we carry for an extra flavor to your drink.  You can learn more about these products by following the links below.

    questions and answersQuestion

Is there a non-pressurized basket available?

    questions and answersAnswer

The Capresso machines do not have the option to change to a non-pressurized filter basket.  In fact, this type of filter basket will actually be more finicky than the basket you have now.  I would recommend sticking to coffees that specifically say espresso grind on the package, or if you’re having it ground freshly, request or use a finer grind setting.  If you’re continuing to have problems, I would recommend calling Capresso at 800-767-3554 and troubleshooting with their techincal staff.
