The Mahlkonig Kenia Coffee Grinder is the grinder-of-choice for a commercial coffee service where dispensing ground coffee in bags is desirable like coffee shops that sell whole beans ground to order, depots and coffee roasters. The Mahlkonig Kenia can also be ordered in a self-service version. The Kenia will maintain a consistent grind over thousands of operations through its 65mm, 2.56 inch, steel grinding discs and is easy to setup and maintain. Operation is delightfully quick as the Kenia can grind 1.1lb of beans to the finest Turkish grind in 1 minute. Simply put the desired amount of beans to be ground in the hopper, up to 1.1lb, set the desired grind fineness on the large rotary dial, lock an empty bag into the bag holder using the large lever, and push the power switch. In under a minute you will have a bag of aromatic fresh ground coffee.
Bag Holder and Handle- The bag holder is an integral part of the dispensing spout and is designed with a bag clamp and a large robust release lever that lets you clamp a bag to the spout to catch the ground coffee in the bag. The large lever then facilitates releasing the full bag of ground coffee for closure. As you use the lever to release the bag you knock it 2 or 3 times against the spout to release any coffee powder still inside the spout into the bag.
Bean Hopper - The 1.1lb capacity bean hopper includes a combined finger protector / magnet holder that prevents the user from reaching into the running grinding mechanism and also prevents ferrous foreign objects from getting into the grinding mechanism. It is a good idea during daily use the clean any clinging debris from the magnet.
Safety Devices - The powerful 1 ½ HP motor is protected by an overload circuit breaker which interrupts power to the motor when the device is subjected to electric overloading. Once the cause of the overload has been corrected the reset button on the back of the Kenia will restore normal operation. The motor is further protected against thermal overloading by a thermostat built into the windings of the motor. If heat builds up in the windings beyond a tolerable level the thermostat will trip and cut the power to the motor. It will then take about 1 hour for the winding to cool down and the circuit to automatically reset.
Grind Fineness Settings - A large rotary knob with a clear gradient scale is located on the front of the machine and provides infinite adjustment for producing grinds for Turkish coffee, Espresso, Drip, Pour-over, and French Press brewing.
Recalibration - The Kenia is carefully calibrated and tested before leaving the Mahlkönig factory but after thousands of cycles can be recalibrated by following the procedure described in the owner’s manual. It’s not complicated and only requires removing the rotary knob and operating the adjusting spindle, not reaching into the grinder!
Cleaning - Mahlkonig recommends monthly cleaning of the operating mechanism using Grindz grinder cleaner. The casing and the residue tray can be cleaned with mild detergents and damp rags, and the magnet in the bean hopper should be checked daily for metallic debris. There aren’t a lot of fussy things to do to this machine. The Kenia is rugged and does what it’s supposed to do day after day, make great ground coffee!
