We’re often talking about coffee as a gourmet food product but in this recipe we’ll explore its potential as a functional beverage. Many people drink coffee daily for a boost of caffeine, including athletes. This recipe is modified from a drink that Danilo Lodi created to help a friend of his who was participating in a marathon. This mixture of caffeine and electrolytes is stimulating, hydrating and tasty enough to keep you smiling all the way to the finish line.

  • Complexity - Low
  • Serves - 1+
  • Prep Time - 10 Min
  • Cost - ($)

Ingredients

  • Coconut Water - 4.4 fl oz / 130 ml
  • Cold Brew Coffee | 1:10 Ratio - 2.4 fl oz / 70 ml
  • Simple Syrup - 0.2 fl oz / 7 ml
  • Salt - 0.2g
  • Lime Wedge (cut the lime in half horizontally, then cut one half into four pieces vertically)

A Note on Coffee and Coconut Water

Coconut water is inherently sweet and can sometimes contain additional added sugars that up the total sweetness of the recipe. When consulting with Danilo for his recommendation on coffee selection he suggested a bright, citric coffee that would help cut through the coconut water. For this particular recipe we used our Colombia Tolima single-origin coffee.

If you’re interested in trying this recipe and are limited on options for coconut water, review the nutrition label to get a sense for how much sugar is being added. If you find the recipe to be sweet enough or want to avoid adding more sugar, you can omit the addition of simple syrup.

Equipment

  • Varia STEEP / French Press
  • Shot Glass Pitcher / Liquid Measuring Cup
  • Scale
  • Drink Dispenser (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Prepare Your Cold Brew

Prepare a 1:10 ratio cold brew here using 60g of coffee and 600 ml of water. We recommend using a Varia STEEP or alternatively you can use a French press, taking care that the plunger is not in contact with your coffee while infusing to avoid imparting any metallic taste to your coffee and double filter through paper after steeping.

Prepare Your Syrup

Simple syrup is incredibly easy to make which is fortunate as it serves as the backbone of many specialty coffee drinks and other cocktails. For this recipe we are using a 1:1 ratio syrup meaning that we’ll be combining filtered water and granulated sugar in equal parts. Based on the number of drinks you’re making, measure out your water and sugar. Add the water to a saucepot and heat on medium. Add your sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Then simply remove from the heat and transfer to an airtight container to cool.

Measure and Combine

This recipe is incredibly simple to prepare. If you’re preparing a single drink, you can easily build it right in the glass. Measure and combine your cold brew, coconut water and simple syrup. A coffee scale makes it easy to avoid oversalting, but we can’t skip the salt either as the added electrolytes increase the hydration factor. Stir in your salt, top with ice and you’re ready to go!

Danilo’s original measurements for this recipe were a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio of cold brew to coconut water so we modified them slightly for simplicity. Our preference was the more coffee forward 1:2, but feel free to experiment and simply maintain the ratio if you’re making a bigger batch. The same goes for your salt and simple syrup:

  • Simple Syrup: 7ml per 200ml of Drink
  • 0.1g per 100ml of Drink

Add a Squeeze of Lime

This last step is purely a Whole Latte Love addition, but in our testing we found (and many people agreed) that the addition of lime juice helped to bring the drink into balance with some much needed acidity. We didn’t get too precise with our measurements but one wedge made a pretty big difference. If you don’t enjoy lime or can’t handle acidity, you can always skip this suggestion (in fact you should give it a try plain too).
