Dutched Dark Chocolate Hot Cocoa

One of my favorite things about espresso machines is showing people just how versatile they can be when it comes to making delicious specialty drinks at home. As much as we love coffee and caffeinated drinks around the office, it’s hard to say no to a classic childhood favorite, hot chocolate.
If you’re someone who enjoys traditional cocoa made from milk heated on the stove then you’ll love this simple recipe for rich hot chocolate with milk steamed by your espresso machine.
- Complexity - Low
- Serves - 1-2
- Prep Time - 5 Min
- Cost - ($)
Ingredients
- Milk - 6 fl oz / 177 ml
- Hollander Café Sauce Dutched Dark Chocolate - 2 fl oz / 60 ml
Equipment
- Espresso Machine
- Frothing Carafe (for super-automatic machines)
- Shot Glass Pitcher/Liquid Measuring Cup
- Spoon
Step-by-Step Instructions
Super-Auto
Combine Milk and Chocolate

Using a liquid measuring cup you can easily measure both the volume of milk and chocolate sauce in one container and safely mix them together. This is handy as not all milk carafe designs are easy to measure and mix in. Once fully combined, transfer your milk and chocolate to your machine’s frothing carafe.
Select the Frothed Milk Option on Your Machine

This may vary somewhat based on the particular machine you own, but simply connect your carafe and select your machine’s frothed milk option. It’s a good idea to overshoot the amount of milk you think you’ll need as the addition of chocolate may affect how much milk is dispensed.
Serve and Enjoy!

And that’s it! Have fun experimenting with syrups, chai mixes, and other hot drink mixes.
A Note on Using Flavoring in Milk Frothers
If you have a super-automatic machine, it is safe to mix milk with chocolate syrup, chai mix, or other flavorings to use with your espresso machine’s auto-frother. If you do, it’s important to fully and thoroughly disassemble and clean all components of the frother to ensure proper hygiene and functioning after use. For an extra thorough clean, formulated milk cleaner like Urnex Rinza can be used to remove built-up milk solids.
Semi-Automatic
Steam Your Milk

Measure 10 fl oz of milk in a frothing pitcher and steam to latte consistency.
Mix a Base of Milk and Chocolate

Add 30g of Hollander Dutched Dark Chocolate sauce to the bottom of a cup. Add a splash of steamed milk to the sauce and mix thoroughly.
Pour and Combine

Pour the remainder of your milk like you normally would. Hot chocolate is actually a great canvas for pouring latte art!
