Gaggia Anima: Basic Maintenance and Alerts

This guide explains what the Gaggia Anima and Anima Prestige screen colors and alert icons mean, and how to handle common day-to-day maintenance tasks. You will learn how to open the machine, remove and empty the dregs drawer, remove and rinse the brew unit, reinstall components correctly, and monitor and empty the drip tray using the float indicator.Beginner: No special tools or technical experience are required. On the Anima Prestige, remove the one-touch frothing carafe first. This helps prevent bumping or stressing attached components while pulling the tray out.When handling the brew unit: Be gentle when sliding it out and back in. Forcing the brew unit can cause misalignment or prevent the access door from closing properly.When carrying a full drip tray: Move slowly and keep the tray level. The tray can be tricky to balance and may spill water on your counter or floor. Watch the screen color during normal use.Expect a cool blue screen during normal operation.If the screen turns red, look for the icon(s) shown. The icons indicate what the machine needs you to correct.Check that the drip tray is fully inserted.Check that the side access door is fully closed.Check that the dregs drawer is inserted properly.If you recently removed the brew unit, confirm it has been reinserted correctly (a separate icon may indicate the brew unit is missing).Remove the water reservoir and confirm it is seated correctly when you reinstall it.Fill the reservoir if the water level is low.Reinsert the reservoir fully into the machine to clear the alert.If you attempted to brew without enough beans, refill the coffee bean hopper.Note that the screen may show red during the attempted brew, then return to blue after the cycle terminates.Once beans are added, the notification should clear.Locate the two tabs on the sides of the drip tray.Push both tabs inward.Pull the drip tray outward to remove it and access the inside of the machine.With the drip tray removed, pull out the dregs drawer.Empty the spent coffee pucks into the trash.If the machine is new, expect the pucks to be less solid until the machine "dials in" over the first few cycles.Reinsert the dregs drawer when finished.Open the side access door to reach the brew unit.Find the tab on the brew unit labeled "push."Press the tab and slide the brew unit out of the machine.Rinse and clean the brew unit on a weekly basis.Pay attention to areas where coffee can build up, including:The coffee insert chuteThe shower screen areaThe ejection rampUse the included brush to help remove built-up coffee where needed.Leave the brew unit out overnight to air dry before reinserting it.With the brew unit removed, locate the sliding tracks inside the machine.These tracks are where brew group lubricant is applied.Plan to lubricate on a one to four month basis, depending on how often you use the machine.Locate the catch tray beneath the brew unit area. This tray catches loose grounds and water.Make sure the catch tray is in place before reinstalling the brew unit.Align the lower corners of the brew unit with the sliding tracks.Slide the brew unit into position. It may take a little practice to line it up correctly.Press the brew unit firmly until it is securely seated.Close the side access door.Check the small red float on the front of the drip tray. The float rises as water collects in the tray.When the float starts bobbing or sits higher than normal, empty the drip tray.To reduce the chance of spills, consider emptying the drip tray whenever you refill the water reservoir or whenever you empty the dregs drawer.Slide the drip tray back into the machine until it is fully seated.Confirm the machine is closed up and ready for use.
