The initial and shutdown rinse cycles are meant for the internal parts of the machine, so some portion will always go directly from the brew unit area to the drip tray rather than out of the front spouts. The machine is not operating under pressure for this rinse, so for that reason, it will not dispense all of the water from the coffee spouts. Some excess water from the brewing process goes directly to the drip tray as well. It is perfectly normal to see water collecting in the internal drip tray.
