The rinse cycle is meant for the internal parts of the machine, so some portion will always go directly from the brew unit area to the drip tray rather than out of the front spouts. The machine is not operating under pressure for this rinse, so for that reason, it will not dispense all of the water from the coffee spouts. Some excess water from the brewing process goes directly to the drip tray as well. It is perfectly normal to see water collecting in the internal drip tray.

The best thing to do to test if there is a problem with your brew unit sending rinse water to the spouts is to brew a beverage on bypass. If the water does not come out of the front spouts during this process, that would indicate a problem with your brew unit. You can set the aroma strength to bypass for testing purposes if you’d like.

Be sure to turn the knob as your water dispenses to help break up any build up in the knob itself. If you do not get the water from the spout, then there may indeed be a problem with the brew unit. This issue can generally be solved with some basic maintenance of the brew unit. The cause of the issue is the inner piston (highlighted on the diagram below) not being able to seat properly and this is a result of grounds getting built up and the lubrication wearing off in some key places.

The highlighted shaft needs to move through its complete range, or there may be some leakage in the brew unit or front door area. Cleaning and lubrication can help ensure the brew unit is moving through positions properly.

How to Clean and Relubricate the Brew Unit:

Make sure that these two points are 100% clean and very well lubricated as they determine the full range of motion on the Inner Piston. Brew unit cleaning is never a bad idea, but this specific cleaning and relubrication will be the best steps to take to resolve issues with no rinse water, Americano water, or descaling water (from the coffee spouts).
