Gaggia Anima: Making Milk Drinks, Steaming Milk and Dispensing Hot Water

This guide covers how to froth milk on the Gaggia Anima series using either the manual Panarello steam wand (Anima) or the one-touch auto-frothing carafe (Anima Prestige). You will learn how to choose the right frothing pitcher, purge condensation before steaming, control foam while frothing, and properly clean and purge the steam wand or carafe after use. Keep hands clear of the tip/dispensing arm during use, and use a towel when wiping parts.Purge before frothing: Condensation water in the steam line can spray or dilute your drink. Always purge into an empty container before placing the wand into milk.Avoid splashing: Keep the wand tip submerged before stopping steam to reduce splatter, and start with the wand positioned securely in the pitcher.Clean promptly: Milk residue can bake on quickly and clog frothing components. Wipe and purge immediately after frothing. Select a frothing pitcher sized for your drink. As milk is aerated, it expands, so leave room for volume increase.Make sure the pitcher shape and height allow the wand tip to reach the milk comfortably. Avoid using an oversized container where the wand cannot reach the milk well.Keep a second empty container or cup nearby for purging condensation from the wand before frothing.Press the Steam button. A thermometer icon will appear while the machine heats to steam temperature.Place an empty container under the steam wand.Allow the initial water to dispense. This is condensation in the steam line, and purging it keeps it out of your milk drink.Once the machine reaches temperature (steam icon shown), stop dispensing as shown in the video by pressing the Aroma Strength button.Fill your pitcher with cold milk (leave room for expansion).Insert the Panarello wand into the milk.Press the Steam button to start steaming and frothing.To increase foam, keep the wand tip closer to the milk surface by lowering the pitcher slightly. The Panarello aerates milk through its air intake.If you want to reduce or stop adding air, raise the pitcher to submerge the air intake so it is no longer pulling in air.Stop steaming using the machine controls as shown in the video (press the Confirm button).Before stopping, ensure the wand is submerged to minimize splashing.Immediately wipe the wand with a towel.Place an empty container under the wand and press the Hot Water button to flush the wand.This helps purge any milk residue that may have entered the wand and also helps remove leftover steam from the boiler so the next brew is not overheated.Using a towel, carefully remove (shimmy off) the nozzle/elbow area to wipe away any milk on the components.Reinstall the nozzle components.Rinse the removable frothing components at the end of the day after you are done using the machine.On the Anima Prestige, remove the front insert if needed (spout cover or water spout), so the carafe can be installed in the front socket.Align the top arm of the machine with the notch on the carafe base.Use the small plastic tab near the drip tray area as an alignment reference, then push the carafe into position until seated.Set the carafe dispensing arm to the dispensing position by aligning the tab with the icons on the carafe lid.Place your cup under the carafe dispensing arm.Press Cappuccino (or Latte Macchiato) to start a one-touch milk drink.If the machine prompts you to install the carafe, install it and continue as directed on-screen.Optional: To customize volumes, press and hold the Cappuccino or Latte Macchiato button to enter memory mode, then follow the machine prompts to program your desired milk and coffee amounts.After making a milk drink, follow the on-screen prompt to clean the carafe.Press Confirm when prompted.Place a container under the carafe dispensing arm to catch the rinse water.The machine will run water through the carafe arm to rinse it.If you missed the quick clean prompt, you can still flush the carafe arm.With the carafe installed, press the Aroma Strength key. You may see a prompt to install the water spout.Leave the carafe in place and dispense hot water so it runs through the frothing arm, purging and cleaning the arm even if the prompt was missed.When you are ready to store the carafe in the refrigerator, move the dispensing arm back into the locked position.To refill, lift the small tab on the carafe lid and pour milk directly into the carafe.Remove the carafe (if installed).Insert the water spout into the front socket.Use the menu to navigate to Drinks, then select Hot Water to dispense hot water from the spout into a pitcher or cup.When finished, remove the spout if you prefer using the spout cover instead.With the carafe installed and positioned for dispensing, open the menu and navigate to Drinks.Select Milk Froth to dispense milk foam (useful for drinks like hot cocoa or chai lattes).Optional: Press and hold Milk Froth to enter the memory/memo function and program your preferred milk foam volume.
