Which Technivorm Moccamaster to Buy?

This is going to come down to a few things: budget, features, and capacity. To make this even easier, we'll start with our top 3 most popular Moccamasters. These are the KBT 741, the KBG 741 AO, and the Cup One.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741

The KBT 741 is one of the most sought after Moccamasters out there. It uses a 9-hole shower head that soaks coffee grounds evenly for an even extraction, and it brews up to 10 cups of delicious, perfect coffee. Plus, it only takes 6 minutes to brew. The KBT 741's heating elements monitor temperatures to ensure ideal brewing conditions, and the included 10-cup thermal carafe retains heat for serving over time.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBG 741 AO

The KBG 741 AO is another of Moccamaster's classics, with a timeless 10-cup glass carafe and 9-hole shower head. Like the KBT, the KBG 741 AO is hand built by Technivorm's engineers in the Netherlands, it features two heating elements that keep brew temps between 198-205°F, and it brews in 6 minutes. Because the KBG 741 AO uses a glass carafe, it's designed to include a heating plate, also. Brewed coffee will hold between 176-185°F for as long as the heating plate is on. For safety and to preserve energy, the heating plate will shut off automatically after 2 hours.

While brewing, a pulse action pre-immersion system blooms the coffee bed. The cone shape of the brew basket is designed to steep coffee grounds perfectly to extract a full bodied, flavorful, aromatic drink. Included with the Cup One is a 10 oz porcelain mug and 80 #1 filters, as well as a removable cup holder for various mug sizes.

How to Use Technivorm Moccamaster?

Coffee makers from Technivorm may look different, maybe even intimidating, compared to other coffee makers out there, but they're actually very simple to use. They work just like any other coffee maker or drip brewer you might already be familiar with. Moccamasters just do it better. Here's a simple step-by-step that should help with just about any Moccamaster out there.

  1. Add water to the reservoir. The markings or fill lines on the reservoir measure the number of cups that will be brewed if filled to that line.
  2. Put the appropriate filter in the brew basket.
  3. Get your coffee and use the included scoop to add coffee to the brew basket. Each scoop will brew 1 cup.
  4. Place the brew basket on the arm above the carafe.
  5. Switch on the power button and brew your coffee.

How to Clean Technivorm Moccamaster?

Eventually, it will come time to clean your Technivorm Moccamaster. That time is every day. Or whenever you use it. Cleaning is simple enough, and mostly focused on the brew basket. Coffee residues and solids can build up inside the brew basket and you need to get rid of that mess. After you're finished making your coffee, toss the used grounds and rinse the basket. Warm, soapy water and thorough rinsing can help with the hard to wash spots. For the pot or carafe, we recommend using Urnex cleaning powder.

Keep your machine running like new and your coffee always tasting its best with Urnex Urn and Brewer Cleaner. Residues and oils that build up over time can result in a bitter, unpleasant taste for your coffee, ruining all of the time spent perfecting your specific brew. Urnex Urn and Brewer Cleaner removes those residues. Simply pour a packet into your coffee urn, scrub with a brush, and rinse until the water runs clear. For smaller containers, use one tablespoon of cleaner then scrub and rinse until water is clear.

Urnex Urn and Brewer Cleaner comes in cases of 100 individual 1 oz packets.

How to Descale Technivorm Moccamaster

It's easy. First things first; use an established descaling solution or decalcifier. Don't use vinegar. A good descaler will restore and maintain the taste of your drinks and break down any calcium build up inside the machine. Vinegar, while quick and dirty (and definitely cheap), tends to leave an unpleasant aftertaste you probably aren't going to like in your morning coffee. Specific instructions will vary from solution to solution, but the general idea is this:

  1. Add a single dose of descaling solution to a reservoir of cold water.
  2. Switch on the power to begin brewing. Don't use any filters in your basket.
  3. Once finished, dispose of the liquid in the carafe.
  4. Drain or empty any remaining water in the reservoir.
  5. Refill the reservoir and brew a few more times without the descaling solution. 3 cycles should do it. This will flush out any remaining solution.

Is the Technivorm Moccamaster Worth It?

If you value the quality and taste of your morning brew, then it's an easy "yes." Moccomaster coffee makers can appear expensive on the surface, but when you pick up a Moccamaster you're getting the top of the line. When it comes to drip coffee, Moccamaster is simply the best. Beyond that are espresso machines, which ramp up in price very quickly and may not be what you're looking for right now. But what exactly do you get for the price?

It comes down to the features. 9-hole shower heads for an even distribution of water, brew baskets especially designed for ideal steeping, independent heating elements that monitor brew temperatures, different selections of carafes, heating plates that can hold at half or full power, and more depending on which coffee maker you pick. Not to mention the durable metal housing and BPA/BPS/BPF & Phthalate free plastics. It all contributes to a superior cup of coffee that a dime-a-dozen coffee maker from the clearance section of a department store can't compete with.

Of course, it must be mentioned that these coffee makers are some of the only ones specifically approved by the Specialty Coffee Association—a deeply respected organization which sets rigid, exacting standards for what defines the best cup of coffee. It goes without saying that we agree with their assessment. So yes, a Technivorm Moccamaster is certainly worth the price.
