Bezzera Matrix MN and DE: How to Remove the Housing
This guide walks through removing and reinstalling the housing panels on the Bezzera Matrix espresso machine. The process is the same for both the Matrix MN, which uses an E61 group, and the Matrix DE, which uses a Bezzera group.
Removing the housing provides access to the machine's internal components for inspection, troubleshooting, and repairs.
Tools Needed
-
3 mm Allen wrench
-
2.5 mm Allen wrench
-
Soft, clean towel or padded work surface
-
Small container to keep track of screws
-
A second person to help support the panels (recommended)

Removing the Housing
Remove the Top Panel
-
Locate the four screws securing the top panel.
-
Using a 3 mm Allen wrench, loosen the two front screws without removing them completely.
-
Remove the two rear screws.
-
Carefully lift the top panel away from the machine.
Place the panel on a clean, soft surface to prevent scratching.
Remove the First Side Panel
-
Locate the screws securing the side panel to the machine.
-
Begin by loosening the screws while leaving them partially threaded. This helps keep the panel supported while you work.
-
Carefully remove the screws while supporting the panel with your free hand.
-
Once the screws have been removed, carefully lift the side panel away from the machine.
-
Place the panel on a padded surface.
Tip: Be careful not to let the panel shift or slide against the surrounding metal components. The panels can scratch easily. Having another person hold the panel while you remove the screws can make this process easier.
Remove the Opposite Side Panel
-
Repeat the same process on the opposite side of the machine.
-
Loosen the panel screws before removing them completely.
-
Support the panel as you remove the remaining screws.
-
Carefully lift the panel away and place it on a soft surface.
Depending on your working position, you may need to remove certain screws first to keep the panel supported while removing the others.
Keep the screws organized so they can be returned to their original locations during reassembly.
Remove the Rear Panel
-
Locate the two screws at the bottom of the rear panel.
-
Remove both screws completely.
-
Support the rear panel and carefully remove it from the machine.
Note: Unlike some other Bezzera models that use slotted mounting points, the Matrix has drilled mounting holes. The screws must line up with these holes during reassembly.
With the rear panel removed, the housing removal process is complete.
Reinstalling the Housing
Reinstalling the panels is generally the reverse of removal. However, it is important to leave certain screws loose until all the panels are aligned.
The panels have limited flexibility, and some adjustment may be needed to line up the mounting holes.
Reinstall the Rear Panel
-
Position the rear panel on the machine.
-
Align the mounting holes at the bottom.
-
Reinstall the two bottom screws, but do not fully tighten them.
Leaving these screws slightly loose allows the rear panel to shift as needed when reinstalling the side panels.
Reinstall the First Side Panel
-
Make sure the inside of the panel is clean before installing it.
-
Position the side panel against the machine in its original orientation.
-
Start by installing the lower screws by hand. Leave them loose.
-
Work your way around the panel, aligning the mounting holes and starting the remaining screws.
-
Install the upper rear corner screw last, as this area may require some adjustment to align properly.
-
Leave the screws loose until the panel is properly positioned.
Tip: It may help to have another person support or gently reposition the rear panel while you align the mounting holes. Avoid sliding the panels against each other, as this can cause scratches.
Reinstall the Opposite Side Panel
-
Position the opposite side panel against the machine.
-
Start the lower screws by hand, leaving them loose.
-
Align the remaining mounting holes and install the screws.
-
If the holes do not line up, gently adjust the position of the rear panel to create the clearance needed.
-
Once all screws are started, check that the panels are properly seated and aligned.
Some adjustment may be necessary. The rear panel has a small amount of flexibility, which can help with aligning the side panels.
Do not force screws into mounting holes that are not lined up. Reposition the panels as needed.
Tighten the Housing Screws
Once both side panels are installed and properly aligned:
-
Tighten the side panel screws.
-
Tighten the two screws at the bottom of the rear panel.
-
Check that all panels are seated correctly and securely attached.
Avoid overtightening the screws.
Reinstall the Top Panel
-
Position the top panel over the machine.
-
Make sure the metal section of the top panel sits in front of the water reservoir opening.
-
Start by installing the two rear screws.
-
Align the front mounting slots with the two front screws.
-
Once the top panel is properly positioned, tighten all four screws.
The front mounting slots provide some flexibility for aligning the top panel.
Finish Reassembly
-
Reinstall the water reservoir.
-
Wipe down the exterior panels to remove fingerprints or smudges.
-
Check that all screws are installed and the panels are secure.
-
Reconnect the machine to power.
Because the steam boiler was drained before removing the housing, it will need to refill when the machine is turned back on. Allow the machine to complete its normal refill and heating process before use.
Additional Tips
-
Protect the panels: Always place removed panels on a soft, clean surface. Be careful of sharp metal edges.
-
Keep track of screws: Store removed screws in a container or organize them by panel to make reassembly easier.
-
Leave screws loose during reassembly: The housing panels may need small adjustments to align all the mounting holes. Tighten the screws only after everything is properly positioned.
-
Consider wearing gloves: Clean gloves can help prevent fingerprints on the inside of the panels during installation.
-
Use a second person: Having someone support the panels while installing or removing screws can make the process easier and reduce the risk of scratches.
-
Do not force alignment: If a mounting hole does not line up, loosen the surrounding screws and gently reposition the panels before trying again.
Once all the housing panels are reinstalled and secured, the Bezzera Matrix is ready to be returned to normal operation.
