Learn what to do if the brew unit or dump box in your Gaggia Accademia is stuck inside the machine, will not go back into the machine, or if the display is showing an E03 error code or E04 error code.

Gaggia Babila: Stuck Brew Unit, E03, E04, or E16

If the brew unit is stuck inside the machine, or will not go back in, it will likely mean either the brew unit or machine is not in the “home” position. The E03 and E04 errors both refer to brew unit issues. The gear in the machine and the brew unit itself both need to be in home position for the brew unit to be able to be either removed or inserted. Generally it will be the machine in the wrong position when the brew unit won't come out, and the brew unit in the wrong position if it will not go back in.

What does the E03 or E04 mean?

  • This is a fail-safe built into the machine to prevent itself from damaging the brew unit
  • E03 - Stuck in Work Position (brew unit blocked in work position)
  • E04 - Stuck in Home Position (brew unit blocked in home position)
  • Restart the machine using the video above to clear the error message and reset the brew unit back to the home position so that it can be removed or inserted as needed.
  • Unplug your machine and wait a minute to be sure it will begin a new startup cycle when the machine powers back on.
  • If the machine is ever in an active rinse cycle do not try to remove the brew unit. The machine should only be powered down once the rinse cycle has completed, and the machine has gone into standby using the power button on the front of the machine.
  • Using more than one level scoop when Bypass Brewing (or brewing with pre-ground coffee) can also cause an E03 or E04.

Once you have removed your brew unit, rinse it off with cold water and let it air-dry overnight before returning to your machine. If hand drying, be sure to use a microfiber towel as cloth or paper towels may leave behind debris.

  • The brew unit will need to be cleaned and lubricated.
  • Reinsert the brew unit into the machine and try brewing a normal espresso shot.

E16: Brew Unit Sensor Error

  • Inspect brew unit and brew unit area parts for any signs of damage
  • If the sensor has failed, it may be due to positioning, wiring, or the sensor itself
  • The wall of the brew unit area can be removed to access the sensor as shown below
  • If direct testing of the sensor shows the sensor has failed, replacement is an option but does not guarantee the issue will be resolved
  • Parts are not returnable
