Gaggia Anima: Manual Priming

If your new Gaggia Anima or Gaggia Magenta will not prime on first startup, the pump may be “dry locked” and unable to pull water into the circuit. This guide walks you through force-priming the water inlet to break the dry lock, temporarily bypassing the water tank sensor so the machine will run its “ventilate/prime” routine, and what to do if the machine shows a no-flow error (such as a red wrench screen with an “E5”) during repeated priming attempts.Clean rubber tubing (about 1/4 inch inner diameter) or a clean turkey basterContainer or pitcher (to catch water from the hot water spout/arm)Wet paper towel or wet cloth (optional, for bypassing the tank sensor)Water tankWater tank inlet neck (inlet in the tank compartment)Water tank sensor area (rectangular spot in the back corner of the lower tank compartment)Hot water spout or hot water arm (varies by model) Do not use compressed air. Forcing air into the inlet can blow internal hoses off their fittings and cause leaks or damage.Use only gentle pressure. You only need a small amount of water and light force to break the dry lock. Excessive force can cause splashing or damage.Use clean, food-safe tools. If using a turkey baster or tubing, make sure it is cleaned first to avoid contaminating the machine’s water circuit.Place a container under the hot water outlet. Water may dispense during the ventilate/prime routine. Turn the machine on and watch for the initial prime/ventilate prompt (often shown as a water drop icon with a circular arrow and a check mark, or a similar “prime/ventilate” message).If the machine tries to prime but cannot pull water, it may be dry locked. On some models, repeated failed attempts can lead to an error screen (for example, a red wrench icon with “E5”), which typically indicates no water flow rather than a major failure.Remove the water tank.Find the inlet neck inside the tank compartment. This is the small “neck” the tank seats onto to supply water into the machine.Fill your tubing or clean turkey baster with water.If using tubing, make sure it fits over the inlet neck snugly enough to create a seal.With the tank still removed, locate the tank sensor area inside the compartment. It is described as a rectangular spot in the back corner of the lower portion of the tank compartment.Trick the sensor by placing a finger/hand over that area, or by using a wet paper towel or wet cloth against that spot.Move your finger/hand or the wet towel slightly as needed until the “add water/insert tank” message goes away. When it disappears, you are in the correct sensor location.Place a container or pitcher under the hot water spout or hot water arm.With the sensor still bypassed, follow the on-screen prompts to begin the ventilate/prime routine (often by pressing the check mark).If your model uses a removable hot water spout, the machine may prompt you to insert it. If your machine has a fixed hot water arm, you may not see this prompt.Press the check mark (or confirm) again to start the pump. You may hear a rattly pump sound at first, which is typical when the pump is dry.While the pump is running, push the water-filled tubing onto the inlet neck just far enough to seal, or press the turkey baster into the center of the inlet.Gently force a small amount of water into the inlet. The goal is to introduce enough water to break the dry lock so the pump can begin pulling water on its own.Listen for the pump sound to change from rattly to a smoother, quieter tone, which indicates water is moving through the pump.Remove the tubing or turkey baster from the inlet.Reinstall the water tank normally.Follow any remaining on-screen prompts (often pressing the check mark again) to continue the prime/ventilate process.Once the circuit is primed, the machine should proceed to its normal heat-up cycle and an automatic rinse.If the machine is very dry locked, you may need to repeat the force-priming process once or twice.If an error appears after multiple prime attempts (such as a wrench screen and “E5”), turn the machine off, turn it back on, and try the ventilate/force-prime process again.Continue until the pump begins pulling water and the prime/ventilate routine completes successfully.
