Gaggia Classic Pro: Initial Setup and First Use

Get to know your new Gaggia Classic Pro machine. This information is good for any version of the machine including the Classic, 2019 Classic Pro, Classic EVO Pro, or Classic Pro E24. We have tips from right out of the box on up to some pro level tips and some common issues you might run into along the way.What's in the Box?If you're a hands-on kind of barista, feel free to pop the lid right off your machine and have a look around! At home maintenance is always encouraged and is one of the best features of your Gaggia Classic Pro! Please be advised that adding parts to your machine that are not included in the original parts diagram will result in a voided warranty. No modifications are required or recommended by Gaggia, Gaggia North America, or Whole Latte Love.What is recommended is double checking internal wiring. Confirm all electrical connections are secure by pressing them in. With the machine open, you can also clear any dust from the top of the machine to prevent dust or particles from packing and shipping from dropping into the water reservoir. Coffee can be present in the tray which can develop mold or attract household pests. Removing and handwashing parts that contact coffee with Urnex Cafiza Espresso Machine Cleaner is recommended to avoid issues with warping from dishwashers and coffee oil buildup.Weekly CleaningClean the water tankWeekly hand washing with dish soap and warm water is recommended. Dishwashers should not be used to clean parts as they can cause warping of components.Clean the Group HeadRunning water through after removing your portafilter is a good thing to do each brew. Backflushing with just water can be done at any time. Weekly with regular use is recommended.Monthly CleaningClean the Group HeadBackflushing with Urnex Cafiza Espresso Machine Cleaner (or any type of detergent for this purpose) should not be done more frequently than a monthly basis. Too much cleanser will strip the lubrication from your internal components along with the coffee oils.DescalingSee the above video on descaling your machine. Be sure to only use the steam wand to flush water from the boiler. Dispensing steam from the grouphead during your descale can result in a Clogged Solenoid Valve.Descaling (cont.)Starting with proper Water Quality and Filtration is your best way to prevent scaling issues. No system is perfect, so occasional descaling is still recommended as directed.Clean the reservoir tubingThe easiest approach is a Portafilter Spout Brush or pipe cleaner with some regular dish soap and warm water. Tubes can be disconnected from the pump if preferred. See our video on Pump Replacement.As NecessaryGroup Head CleaningRegular backflushing and cleaning should help keep your grouphead components clean without needing to take them apart. If cleaning does not work, or it is time to replace components, see our video on Group Head Cleaning and Service.We recommend replacing the grouphead gasket and shower screen annually, or upgrade at any time!Nanotech Shower ScreenSilicone Group GasketCleaning the unit housing or exterior panelsAs necessary. Cleaner does not need to be food safe as long as the component does not contact coffee, water, or milk. Never apply cleaners or solvents to the machine directly. Apply any cleaners to a microfiber cloth before application.
