Gaggia Anima: Dump Box Removal

If your Gaggia Anima drip tray and dreg (dump) box feel stuck, will not slide in, or will not come out, the most common cause is the brew group being parked in the wrong position. This article explains how to confirm the machine is not in the middle of a brew, rinse, or descale cycle, what the brew group "work position" looks like, what the correct "home/rest" position looks like, and what to do if the brew group will not return to home so the tray and dreg box can be removed or installed normally.Technical Skill Level: BeginnerThis is a basic check that does not require disassembly or special tools.No tools requiredStep-by-Step Instructions1) Confirm the machine is not running a cycleCheck that the machine is not in the middle of brewing or rinsing.If the machine is descaling, let the descale program finish.During the first part of the descale cycle, it is normal for the machine to pump a little water, pause for about 30 to 60 seconds, then pump more water. This repeats until the tank is empty for the first stage.2) Do not force the drip tray or dreg boxNotice: Avoid pulling hard or forcing the tray/dreg box in or out. If the brew group is not in the home position, it can physically block the dreg box. Forcing it can damage internal components.If the tray/dreg box is difficult to remove, stop and proceed to checking the brew group position.If you removed the tray/dreg box with difficulty and now it will not go back in, do not force it. Continue to the next steps to confirm the brew group is parked correctly.3) Check whether the brew group is in the "work position" (blocking the dreg box)Open the service door and look at the brew group.If the brew group is in the work position, you will see a "tongue" (a protruding piece) sticking out.When that tongue is sticking out, it can be in the way of the dreg box and prevent the tray/dreg box from being removed or installed properly.4) Confirm the brew group is in the "home/rest" position (correct position)The home/rest/neutral position is when the tongue is already rested (not sticking out).Verify the two arrows on the brew group are lined up.Once the brew group is in the home position, the drip tray and dreg box should remove and install normally.5) If the brew group is stuck in work positionNotice: If the brew group is not moving and you have confirmed the machine is not in the middle of a brew, rinse, or descale cycle, do not continue trying to force the tray/dreg box.Use the procedure shown in Whole Latte Love's video on entering the tech menu to reset the brew group (this resets the brew group position so it can return to the correct spot).After the brew group is reset to the correct position, reinstall or remove the tray and dreg box as needed.Safety Warnings &amp; NoticesDo not remove the tray or dreg box while the machine is in the middle of a cycle (brewing, rinsing, or descaling). The brew group may be moving or parked in a position that blocks the dreg box.Do not force the tray or dreg box if it is stuck.
