Gaggia Accademia (2022): E01, E02, Add Coffee, and other Grinder Issues
The most common cause for any grinder issue is buildup in the chamber, burrs, or chute. This buildup causes less beans to enter the grinder allowing a faster rotation of the burrs which then triggers the "Add Coffee" alert. It's very important for this reason to make sure you are using non-oily beans in any super-automatic espresso machine.

If the buildup is not too severe, you can do this with a vacuum and a small brush. It may help to wait until the hopper is empty if possible. Urnex SuperGrindz Super-Automatic Grinder Cleaner is also great for preventative maintenance on a new machine or after cleaning to avoid running into cases of heavy buildup that can not be cleaned using these basic cleaning methods. If you find that the buildup is too severe to be cleaned using these basic methods, or if you'd just prefer to be a bit more thorough, the video below will show you how to remove the grinder assembly from the machine for cleaning.
Cleaning, Calibrating or Replacing the Grinder
- After cleaning and reassembly, set your grinder knob to the coarsest setting
- Reset the machine using "Factory Reset" from your machine's main menu
- A hard reset will clear out any settings, profiles, and Auto Learning Dose information for the grinder allowing for recalibration
- If the main menu cannot be accessed due to machine issues, the steam out performs the same type of reset.

Add Coffee Error

- The error may still display after the cleaning and reset
- Error should decrease in frequency until ultimately resolving
- May take up to 20 successful extractions for error to resolve
- Shots do not need to be run consecutively, keep setting coarse
- One notch finer as the grinder runs is the recommended grinder adjustment method after issue resolves
If you go through the cleaning and recalibration process and are still getting an error or having grinder issues, the next step will be to try replacing the grinder at home using the above cleaning video. The grinder assembly has some parts like the burrs and brushes that will wear down over time. A grinder with dull burrs or brushes could behave in much the same manner as a grinder with buildup. Please be advised that we cannot guarantee replacing the grinder assembly will resolve an error with your machine and parts are not returnable.
