Bezzera DUO MN and DE: How to Remove the Housing

This guide walks through removing and reinstalling the housing on the Bezzera DUO espresso machine. The process is the same for both the DUO MN, which uses an E61 group, and the DUO DE, which uses a Bezzera group.Removing the housing provides access to the machine's internal components for inspection, troubleshooting, and repairs.2.5 mm Allen wrench3 mm Allen wrench, preferably with a ball endTwo soft towels or ragsSoft, clean surface for placing the removed housingNote: A ball-end Allen wrench is recommended because some of the housing screws are recessed and must be accessed at an angle.Locate the four screws securing the top panel.Remove all four screws using the appropriate Allen wrench.Carefully lift the top panel off the machine.Place the panel on a clean, soft surface to prevent scratching.There are two recessed screws that secure the housing near the upper portion of the machine. These screws can be difficult to access because of their position.Locate the recessed screw on one side of the machine.Insert the ball-end Allen wrench at an angle to reach the screw.Turn the wrench to loosen the screw several turns.Do not remove the screw completely. It only needs to be loosened enough to release the housing.Repeat the process for the recessed screw on the opposite side.Tip: The ball end of the Allen wrench allows you to approach the recessed screws at an angle, making them easier to reach. These screws can sometimes be tight, so make sure they are loosened sufficiently before attempting to remove the housing.The machine needs to be tilted forward to access the screws underneath the housing.Place a soft towel on the work surface where the front of the machine will rest.Position a second towel to protect the group head and any other surfaces that may contact the work surface.Carefully tilt the machine forward onto the towels.Important: Make sure the machine is stable and properly supported before removing any screws. The towels will help prevent scratches or damage to the housing and group head.A small amount of water may drain from the reservoir socket when the machine is tilted. This is normal.With the machine tilted forward, the lower housing screws are accessible.Locate the screws securing the housing along the bottom of the machine.Remove the two side screws completely.Remove the two rear screws.The rear screws can technically be loosened rather than removed, but removing them completely may make reassembly easier.Keep track of the screws and washers so they can be reinstalled in their original locations.Carefully tilt the machine back into its normal upright position.Support the housing as you return the machine upright.Check that the housing is free to move.The housing is held in place by mounting points that slide into position. Once the screws have been loosened or removed, the housing can be lifted away.Before removing the housing completely, you must disconnect the electrical connection for the light at the rear of the housing.Locate the wire connection near the rear housing light.Identify the connector associated with the red and brown wires.Carefully disconnect the wire connector.Important: Do not pull the housing away from the machine without disconnecting this wire. Pulling on the housing while the wire is connected could damage the wiring or connector.Carefully lift the housing upward to release it from its mounting points.Gently work the housing away from the machine.Make sure the disconnected light wiring does not become caught or pulled as you remove the housing.Place the housing on a clean, padded surface.The housing removal process is now complete.Reinstalling the housing is generally the reverse of removal. However, it is important to leave the mounting screws loose until everything has been properly aligned.Position protective towels on the work surface.Carefully tilt the machine forward.Make sure the machine is stable before proceeding.Todd recommends tilting the machine forward during reassembly because it makes positioning the housing and accessing the lower screws easier.Carefully position the housing over the machine.Make sure the wiring for the rear housing light remains accessible and does not become trapped inside the machine.Lower the housing into position.Align the housing mounting points with the corresponding slots or brackets on the machine.Adjust the housing as needed until it is properly seated.Tip: Pay attention to the location of the light wiring. If the wire becomes trapped inside the housing, you may need to remove the housing again to retrieve it.Locate the previously disconnected wire connector.Reconnect the wiring for the rear housing light.Make sure the connector is seated securely.Check that the wiring is not pinched between the housing and the machine.It is best to reconnect this wire before the housing is fully secured so you can confirm that it remains accessible.Locate the lower mounting holes.Reinstall the lower screws, making sure to include their washers.Start each screw by hand to avoid cross-threading.Leave all the screws slightly loose until the housing is properly aligned.The housing may shift slightly while you install the screws. You may need to move between the mounting points and make small adjustments to get everything lined up.Do not fully tighten the screws yet.Carefully return the machine to its upright position.Push upward on the housing to make sure it is fully seated.Locate the recessed housing screws that were loosened during removal.Using the ball-end Allen wrench, access the screws at the same angle used during removal.Tighten both recessed screws securely.Make sure the housing is fully raised and properly positioned before tightening these screws.Carefully tilt the machine forward again, protecting the front and group head with towels.Tighten the lower housing screws that were left loose during installation.Check that the screws and washers are properly seated.Return the machine to its upright position.Avoid overtightening the screws.Position the top panel over the machine.Make sure the panel's metal retaining section fits behind the corresponding mounting section of the housing.Align the four mounting holes.Install the two rear screws first, leaving them slightly loose.Install the two front screws.The front mounting points have slots that allow for some adjustment, so installing the rear screws first makes alignment easier.Check that the top panel is sitting evenly and is properly aligned.Tighten all four screws.Reinstall the drip tray.Reinstall the water reservoir and fill it as needed.Check that the housing is properly seated and all screws are secure.Wipe down the exterior panels to remove any fingerprints or smudges.Reconnect the machine to power.Because the steam boiler was drained before removing the housing, it will need to refill when the machine is turned back on. Allow the machine to complete its normal refill and heating process before use.Use a ball-end Allen wrench: The recessed upper housing screws are positioned at an angle that makes them difficult to access with a standard straight-end wrench.Protect the machine when tilting it: Use soft towels to prevent scratches or damage to the group head and housing.Keep the screws organized: The lower screws have washers that need to be reinstalled.Leave screws loose during reassembly: This allows the housing to shift slightly while aligning the mounting points.Watch the light wiring: The rear housing light is connected to the machine by a wire that must be disconnected during removal and reconnected during installation.Check housing alignment: Make sure the housing is pushed fully upward into position before tightening the recessed upper screws.Use a second person if needed: Having someone help support the machine or housing can make the removal and reinstallation process easier.Once all the housing panels are properly aligned and secured, the Bezzera DUO is ready to be returned to normal operation.
