Gaggia Anima: Bypass Brewing Tutorial

This guide walks you through brewing common drinks on the Gaggia Magenta using the touchscreen drink icons, including a traditional espresso, a double (x2) espresso, and a one-touch Americano. It also covers what to expect from your first few shots while the grinder adapts, plus the correct way to use the pre-ground (bypass doser) function for a successful espresso.BeginnerYou will be using the touchscreen drink menu and a few simple adjustments like selecting strength/temperature, choosing the x2 option, and (optionally) loading pre-ground coffee with the included scoop. The steps are low risk, with the main caution being how much coffee you load when using the bypass doser.Pre-ground coffee scoop (included with the machine, stored in the pre-ground compartment)Knife or your finger (to level the scoop when dosing pre-ground coffee)Cup riser (removable stainless steel piece with rubber grips)Bypass hatch / pre-ground coffee chute (bypass doser) Hot liquid warning: Coffee and hot water dispense from the spouts during brewing. Keep hands clear of the dispensing area, and use a cup that is stable and appropriately sized to help avoid splashing.Pre-ground dosing notice: When using the bypass doser, do not pack (compact) the grounds and do not overfill the scoop. Doing so can max out brew group pressure and cause the machine to dump the shot, wasting coffee and time. If this is your first time using the machine, expect the first couple of shots to be underwhelming.This is normal because the grinder needs time to adapt to your coffee and the brew group needs a few cycles to fill with the correct dose.Keep brewing. By about the third shot, the grinder's adapting system will typically produce richer, more crema-forward espresso.From the touchscreen, select the Espresso drink.Adjust settings as desired:Volume (example shown: 1.3 oz)Strength (example shown: up to full strength)Temperature (example shown: set to High)Place your cup under the spouts.Press Start to begin brewing.If prompted and you want to keep these parameters, choose the option to save the setting.Select the Espresso drink.Select the x2 option to grind and brew twice in one go.Place your cup(s) under the spouts.Press Start and let the machine complete both brew cycles.If you are using a taller cup, remove the cup riser to increase clearance under the spouts.Place your cup under the spouts.Select the Americano drink on the touchscreen.Confirm or adjust the recipe as desired (example shown: about 1.5 oz coffee and about 5 oz water).Press Start for a one-touch Americano (the machine pulls an espresso shot, then adds hot water to fill the cup).From the drink menu, select Espresso.Switch from beans to the scoop icon (pre-ground mode).Locate the scoop (it is stored in the pre-ground area on the machine).Prepare one scoop correctly:Start with a slightly heaping scoop.Shake the scoop gently to settle grounds into crevices without compacting them.Level the scoop using a knife or your finger (similar to leveling flour when baking).Open the bypass hatch on top of the machine.Gently pour the pre-ground coffee into the bypass chute.Press Start/Stop to begin brewing, and confirm you have loaded the pre-ground coffee before the brew starts.Use coffee that is ground for espresso. Drip-ground coffee will not provide enough resistance for proper extraction.Use fresh pre-ground coffee whenever possible. Old pre-ground coffee can produce poor results.Pre-ground is a great option for situations like serving decaf to guests while keeping caffeinated beans in the hopper.Ensure you use a level scoop of coffee and do not pack the coffee into the scoop. Overfilling and packing will result in errors.
