Gaggia Anima: Initial Setup and First Use

This guide walks you through the initial setup for the Gaggia Anima and Anima Prestige super automatic espresso machines. You will learn what accessories come in the box, how to power on and prime the machine, how to test and program your water hardness, how to install and activate the strongly recommended Mavea Intenza water filter, how to review key menu settings, and how to set your grinder to a good starting point for espresso.Beginner: This setup uses no special tools beyond the included scoop/socket and basic household items (water, a bowl or pitcher). Steps are menu-driven and low-risk if you follow the cautions about hot water and grinder adjustment.Included dual-purpose scoop/socket (grinder adjustment socket and pre-ground scoop)Included water hardness test stripBowl (for dipping test strip and hydrating the water filter)Large bowl or pitcher (to run hot water during filter activation)Mavea Intenza water filter (optional but strongly recommended)Water spout (included with Anima Prestige; used for hot water dispensing and when the carafe is not installed)Gaggia brew group lubricant (included)Cleaning brush (included) Hot water and hot surfaces: During priming and filter activation, the machine dispenses hot water. Keep hands away from the spout/wand, use a sufficiently large container, and place it on a stable surface to avoid splashes and burns.Do not brew with first reservoir water: Rinse the reservoir before use and do not use the first water you add to brew coffee. This helps flush out any manufacturing or storage residues.Grinder adjustment caution: If there are beans in the grinder, only move the grind setting one step at a time to help prevent grinder damage. Ideally, set the grinder before adding beans.Avoid extra dark or oily beans: Very oily beans can leave residue in the hopper, auger, and brew group, which can lead to performance problems over time.Use approved descaler: When descaling is needed, use the approved Gaggia decalcifying solution to help avoid damage from inappropriate chemicals. Remove and identify the included accessories:Dual-purpose scoop/socket: One end is a hexagonal socket for adjusting grind size. The other end is a measured scoop for the bypass doser (pre-ground coffee).Brew group lubricant: Food-safe lubricant used to keep the brew group mechanism moving smoothly.Cleaning brush: For brushing coffee grounds off the brew unit during cleaning.Water hardness test strip: Used to set water hardness so the machine can prompt descaling at the right time.Anima Prestige only: Water spout that inserts into the front socket (where the carafe also fits). It is used for dispensing hot water and for appearance when the carafe is not installed.If you purchased one (recommended), locate your Mavea Intenza water filter for later installation.Plug the power cord into the back of the machine.Flip the rear power switch to the ON position. (The front power button will not work unless the rear switch is on.)Confirm the front power button shows a red ring, indicating the machine is receiving power.Press the front power button to turn the machine on.When the machine indicates it needs water, remove the water reservoir.For easier removal, grab both sides of the reservoir handle and pull upward.Rinse the reservoir at the sink.Reinstall the reservoir and fill it with fresh water.Ensure the machine can dispense water during priming:Baseline Anima: Water dispenses from the hot water spout.Anima Prestige: Insert the water spout so the machine can dispense water from it.Insert the filled reservoir into the machine.Allow the priming cycle to complete. (A brand new machine may dispense more water and take longer than the example shown in the video.)Wait until the standard home screen appears, indicating the machine is ready.Open the included water hardness test strip.Dip the strip into the water you plan to brew with (the same water source you will normally use).Shake off excess water and set the strip aside.After about a minute, read the result by counting how many of the four squares have changed color (1 to 4).Submerge the Mavea Intenza filter cartridge in water.Squeeze the cartridge a couple of times while submerged to help remove air bubbles and hydrate the filter media.Set the filter dial based on your test strip result:A corresponds to hardness results 1 to 2B corresponds to hardness result 3C corresponds to hardness result 4To change the setting, pinch the two grips on the base and twist to the correct letter.Press the Menu button to enter the machine menu.Use the machine’s navigation controls:Espresso button: back/returnAroma strength button: confirm/OKSteam and Menu buttons: up/down navigationNavigate to Water Hardness and confirm.Select the hardness level (1 to 4) that matches your test strip result, then confirm.In the menu, navigate to the Water Filter setting and confirm.Set the filter option to On and confirm.Note: After activation, the machine will display an icon when it is time to replace the filter.Install the filter into the reservoir’s water inlet socket.Orient the filter so the filter’s inlet faces away from the wall of the reservoir, then press/seat it firmly.Reinstall the reservoir and close the lid.Activate the filter by running water through the machine:Place a large bowl or pitcher under the hot water outlet.Start hot water dispensing. The machine will heat, then dispense hot water.Repeat dispensing until you have run an entire reservoir of water through the hot water outlet.Refill the reservoir with fresh water.Your filter is now activated and the machine is ready to brew.Press Menu to review additional settings:Coffee Temperature: Min/Medium/Max (approximately 175 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit).Standby: Time before the machine powers off (15 to 180 minutes). This also impacts how often the machine performs a rinse after powering back on.Display Contrast: Adjust for easiest viewing.Start Calc Clean: Starts the automated descaling process when prompted by the descaling icon.Factory Reset: Restores default settings (use only if you truly need to reset).Anima Prestige note: Pressing Menu shows two choices, Menu and Drinks. Select Menu to access the settings listed above. (The Drinks option contains additional drink options covered in a different video.)Locate the grinder adjustment post (the yellow post in the hopper) and its arrow indicator for the current setting.Set the grinder to a good starting point:There are five “finest” settings, and the recommended starting point is the finest setting before making later adjustments.Make adjustments before adding beans whenever possible.To adjust, place the hexagonal socket end of the included scoop over the post, then push down and turn (similar to opening a childproof bottle).If you adjust with beans in the grinder, move only one step at a time to reduce risk of grinder damage.Avoid extra dark or oily beans, which can cause oil buildup in the hopper/auger and brew group over time.When the grinder is set, add beans to the hopper.
