This guide explains what it means when the Gaggia Anima or Anima Prestige display turns red and shows alert icons, then walks you through the most common owner maintenance tasks. You will learn how to confirm the drip tray, side door, dregs drawer, and brew unit are installed correctly, how to respond to water reservoir and “no beans” alerts, and how to remove, rinse, and reinstall the brew unit. The article also covers emptying the dregs drawer, checking the drip tray float indicator, and general habits that help keep the machine clean and running smoothly.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Identify Red Screen Alerts

  1. If the display turns red, look at the icons shown on the screen. These icons indicate what the machine needs your attention for.
  2. If you see the icon showing the drip tray being pulled out and the door being closed, check for any of these conditions:
    • The drip tray is not inserted.
    • The side access door is not fully closed.
    • The dregs drawer was removed and not reinserted.
  3. If you see the brew unit missing icon, reinstall the brew unit. This commonly appears if you removed the brew unit for rinsing or maintenance and forgot to put it back, or it was not seated correctly.
  4. If you see the water reservoir alert, confirm the reservoir is fully inserted and that it has enough water.
  5. If you see the “no beans” error, add coffee beans to the hopper. The message may appear red during a brew attempt, then change back to blue after the cycle ends to show the machine itself is OK and simply needs beans.

Remove The Drip Tray

  1. Prepare the machine for tray removal:
    • On the Anima (steam wand model), position the steam wand outward before pulling the tray.
    • On the Anima Prestige, remove the one-touch frothing carafe before pulling the tray.
  2. Press in the two tabs on the sides of the drip tray.
  3. Pull the drip tray outward to remove it from the front of the machine.

Empty The Dregs Drawer

  1. Pull out the dregs drawer from the drip tray assembly.
  2. Empty the spent coffee pucks into a trash can.
  3. If the machine is new, note that the pucks may be loose at first. After a few brew cycles and drawer emptying cycles, they typically become more solid and cohesive.

Open The Side Door

  1. Open the side access door to access the brew unit area.

Remove The Brew Unit

  1. Locate the brew unit inside the machine.
  2. Press the tab labeled “push” and slide the brew unit out of the machine.

Clean The Brew Unit

  1. Rinse and clean the brew unit on a weekly basis to prevent coffee buildup.
  2. Pay special attention to areas where coffee can accumulate, including:
    • The insert chute
    • The shower screen
    • The ejection ramp
  3. Use the included brush to help remove coffee residue where needed.
  4. Leave the brew unit out of the machine overnight to air dry before reinserting.

Check Lubrication Tracks

  1. With the brew unit removed, locate the sliding tracks inside the machine.
  2. These tracks are where brew group lubricant is applied.
  3. Lubrication is typically done on a one to four month basis, depending on how frequently you use the machine.

Reinstall Catch Tray

  1. Locate the catch tray beneath the brew unit area (it catches loose coffee grounds and water).
  2. Reinstall the catch tray if it was removed.

Reinstall The Brew Unit

  1. Line up the corners of the brew unit with the sliding tracks.
  2. Slide the brew unit into place. This can take a little getting used to.
  3. Press the brew unit securely into the machine.
  4. Close the side access door.

Empty The Drip Tray

  1. Check the small red float at the front of the drip tray. As the tray fills, the float rises and starts to bob, indicating it is time to empty the tray.
  2. Carefully carry the tray to the sink and empty it.
  3. To help prevent spills, get in the habit of emptying the drip tray any time you refill the water reservoir or any time you empty the dregs drawer.

Reinsert The Drip Tray

  1. Slide the drip tray assembly back into the machine until it is fully seated.

Safety Warnings & Notices

  • Before removing the drip tray: On the Anima (steam wand model), position the steam wand outward first. On the Anima Prestige, remove the one-touch frothing carafe first. This helps prevent bumping or stressing attached parts during removal.
  • When emptying the drip tray: The tray can be fairly deep and may be easy to spill while carrying it to the sink, especially if your machine is not close by. Carry it slowly and keep it level.
  • When reinstalling the brew unit: Make sure the brew unit is aligned with the sliding tracks and pressed in securely before closing the door. If it is not seated correctly, the machine may show a missing brew unit alert and may not operate.
