Gaggia Classic Pro: Hardware and Usage Basics

Learn how to use the portafilter and filter baskets of the Gaggia Classic Pro, as well as how to use the rocker switches and understand what different indicator lights mean.When the machine is turned on from being off and cooled down, the power light is the only light that should come on right away.The power light should remain on as long as the machine is powered on. Without pressing the brew or steam switches, the brew light should come on after a minute or two.This may be a bit faster if the machine was on previously or slower if the room temperature is low.The boiler will automatically heat to brewing temperature when no switches have been activated other than the power switch.If the brew light comes on right away, or does not come on at all, you may have some heating or thermostat related issues.If the light seems to be happening too quickly, please allow the machine to fully cool down. Unplug, wait 24 hours, and try again.Unlike the brew light, the steam light should not come on unless the steam switch has been pressed.The steam switch being on will set the machine to raise the boiler temperature from brewing to steaming temperature. Once it is at steam temperature, the steam light will come on, and the knob can be opened to begin steaming. The steam light coming on immediately when the switch is activated, or not coming on at all after the steam switch has been turned on could also imply heating or thermostat related issues. If everything seems to be working in terms of how the machine is heating, but your light is not coming on, it may be that the bulb has slipped out of place.Those red lenses on the front of the machines have little clips on the back that hold the lights in place. If you have the machine on with the lid removed, you may be able to see that light down towards the bottom of the machine if that clip has broken. It may help if it's a bit dark in the room to check that out. If you see it in there and the lens is broken, you can order individual replacement lenses as pictured to the right.Just make sure to let the machine cool down before you try and reach inside the machine to retrieve that light. If the power light is working but is not connected, you should see it down towards the bottom along the front of the machine. Just look down along the left side of the power button from the top of your machine:This basket is designed for 7g of espresso, or one shot.Single Pressurized Baskets are available via Gaggia but not included with your machine.This basket is designed for 14g of espresso, or a double/doppio shot.Other brands of baskets are fine to use on your machine, just be sure they are 58mm.This basket is also designed for 14 g of espresso, or a double/doppio shot.The pressurized basket has just 1 hole on the bottom rather than holes covering the bottom as on the commercial baskets.The pressurized basket is designed to be used on coffee that may not be zeroed in to your machine, or pre-ground coffee.Find your grinder brand and get dialed in!The 2-way diffuser nozzle must be in place in your portafilter beneath the pressurized basket to prevent spraying.Please Note: sometimes in shipping you'll have internal components shift a round a bit. The buttons have tension clips that keep them in the machine as well. If shifting the wiring back does not allow the button to sit flush with the machine, the button will need to be replaced as the clip is broken. The button itself will work just fine as long as the wiring is properly connected.
