ECM Synchronika: Diagnose Heating Issues

This guide covers how to diagnose heating problems on an ECM Synchronika, starting with simple front-panel symptoms like the machine not heating due to an unseated or empty water reservoir. It also explains what PID error codes A1 and A3 mean (open circuit at the boiler temperature probe), how to check and reseat probe connections, and how to test key heating-circuit components like thermal limit switches, the heating element, and the relay. Hot surfaces can cause burns.Live voltage testing exposes you to dangerous AC voltage. If you are not experienced and comfortable testing live electronics, stop and contact Whole Latte Love support or a qualified technician.For live voltage tests, keep meter probes firmly seated, keep metal probe tips from touching the chassis or each other, and avoid holding exposed conductors.When disconnecting wires from components, pull on the connector (not the wire) to reduce the chance of damaging wiring or terminals.If you tip the machine forward to access the bottom panel, remove the reservoir first and expect some water drips. Protect your countertop and the machine with a cloth. Look at the front of the machine:If the green power light is on, but the PID display and orange heating lamp are off, the machine is typically not sensing water.Confirm the reservoir is properly installed and seated.Confirm the reservoir has enough water. The machine will not heat if it does not have water.If your machine is plumb-capable, switch to plumb mode as a quick check. If it powers up and heats normally in plumb mode, the issue is likely reservoir placement/sensing.Check the PID for error messages:A1 indicates an open circuit on the NTC temperature probe for the brew boiler.A3 indicates an open circuit on the NTC temperature probe for the steam/service boiler.Locate the NTC probe connection between the probe and where it plugs into the PID.Inspect the connector tabs (the small metal tabs in the connection).If they look partially backed out (for example, you only see half of the metal tab), the connector may be loose.Reseat the connection by pushing the wires/connectors in until you feel a small click.Reconnect and recheck the PID error. If the error clears, the machine should resume heating normally.If the probe connection looks good and the error persists, the NTC probe is likely failed and should be replaced.Use a wrench to remove the probe.Apply a small amount of thread sealant to the threads of the new probe before installing it.Install the new probe and confirm the error message is gone and the machine heats properly.If the machine is not heating (for example, the group is still cold after about 30 minutes and the PID temperature has not risen), begin component testing.Remove the reservoir.Unplug the machine.Position the machine so you can access the top of the boiler where the thermal limits are located.Locate the two thermal limit switches on the top of the boiler.Set your multimeter to resistance/continuity.Test each thermal limit for continuity across its two terminals. You are listening/looking for the continuity indication (tone).If a thermal limit does not show continuity, it may be tripped:Press the small black reset cap on the limit until you feel a click.Retest for continuity.If the thermal limit will not reset (still no continuity), replace it:Remove the two electrical legs/connectors.Unscrew the thermal limit and screw in the replacement.No sealant is needed because it does not go all the way through the boiler.Locate the two element wires (black and blue in the video example) and disconnect them from the element.Set your multimeter to resistance/continuity.Test between the two element terminals for continuity:If you have continuity, the element is not open.If you have no continuity, the element is fractured/open and must be replaced.Check for a short to ground:Test from each element terminal to the element flange/body.You should not have continuity to the element body.Note: Rarely, an element can pass basic tests when cold but fail as it heats (for example, due to pinholes that allow water into the element as metal expands). This is uncommon, but worth keeping in mind if symptoms persist.Reinstall the reservoir and confirm it is in place. The machine will not heat if the reservoir is not sensed.Plug the machine back in.Set your multimeter to AC voltage (not DC).Turn the machine on so it calls for heat.Carefully test voltage at the heating element terminals:If you measure approximately line voltage (about 120 VAC in the video example), voltage is reaching the element.If you do not measure voltage at the element when it should be heating, you will need to trace where power is being lost (relay, limits, control signals).Locate the brew boiler relay (viewed from underneath in the video).When the machine is calling for heat, look for the relay’s red indicator light showing it is receiving power/control signal.If needed, use a voltage test to confirm power through the relay:Test for voltage on the relay output (for example, from the relay leg to a ground point).If there is no voltage coming out, check for voltage coming into the relay next.If major components (limits, relay, element) check out but the machine still does not heat, the issue may be in the PID or control board and may require deeper diagnostics.For steam/service boiler heating issues, the same testing sequence applies (limits, relay, element), but element access is different.Remove the reservoir to reduce spilling, and place a cloth down to protect the machine.Tip the machine forward onto its face (or onto its side), resting it carefully on the cloth.Remove the small bottom access panel:Remove the four screws (3 mm hex).You can leave one screw loose if desired while removing the panel, as shown in the video.Use the opening to access the steam boiler heating element terminals for continuity and voltage testing.Reassembly note: Element terminal polarity is not important, so if you forget which wire was on which side, it is still OK.Additional note: There is also a drain plug on the bottom of the steam boiler that can be used to drain it if needed, but it can be messy because it may not line up perfectly with the access opening.
