What is that Noise Coming From My Machine?

Louder than rotary.Rotary pump: a smoother low hum. Some vibration is still normal.2) Shipping Bolt Installed (Synchronika / Pro 700)If your machine arrived recently and sounds extra loud or harsh, the shipping bolt may still be installed under the chassis and can couple pump vibration into the frame.Unplug the machine.Tip or lift safely and locate the shipping bolt/bracket under the base (varies: wing nut or hex bolt).Remove it entirely and do not reinstall for normal use.Refit panels; test again.Heads-up: A shipping bolt forces vibration into the frame, making the whole case resonate. Removing it dramatically quiets the machine.3) Housing Vibration After ShippingPanels can shift slightly and touch the case.With the machine unplugged and cool, check the cup-warmer/top panel alignment.If a panel touches a sidewall, loosen screws, realign, retighten.Press test: while the pump runs, gently press on different case areas and the drip tray. If the noise stops, you’ve found the contact point.Add a felt/silicone pad or adjust fit to prevent contact.4) Boiler Heating &amp; Vacuum Relief (Normal)A subtle hollow heating sound as water approaches temperature is normal.On warm-up, you may hear a brief hiss followed by a click—that’s the vacuum relief valve sealing.If the machine fully cools then reheats, you should generally hear this cycle.Note: If you never hear the vacuum relief (after a full cool-down) and steaming behavior is odd, the valve may be sticking and could need inspection.5) Knocking/Thumping From Inside → Coffee Boiler Not Fully FilledOn some dual-boiler machines, the coffee boiler can be left partially unfilled.Raise the brew lever and confirm steady water flow from the group.If flow sputters or stops, perform the machine’s boiler fill procedure (consult your model’s manual) to fully prime the coffee boiler.Re-test for knocking.Caution: Running with a partially filled coffee boiler can cause unusual noises and poor performance.6) Very High-Pitched “Hollow” Pump Rattle → Dry PumpA vibratory pump that’s starved of water becomes high-pitched and whiny, not the usual loaded hum.Stop brewing immediately.Check reservoir level, tank seating, and pinched/blocked intake lines.If plumbed-in, verify the plumb/ tank selector and water supply is open.Restore water supply, prime as needed, and test.Warning: Do not run the pump dry. Prolonged dry operation can damage the pump.7) Random Rattles, Taps, and Case BuzzInside the case, parts that touch the boiler, frame, or each other can transmit noise.Unplug and cool the machine. Remove the top panel (if comfortable).With a flashlight, look for inline filters, OPV bodies, braided hoses or wires resting on a boiler or the case.Reposition or add a small insulator so parts don’t contact.Reinstall the panel and test.Persistent drip tray buzz: confirm it’s fully seated; add a thin silicone pad if needed.8) Squeaky Brew Lever (E61) &amp; Squeaky Steam/Hot-Water ValvesSqueaks usually indicate dry cam surfaces or valve threads/seals.If the squeak followed backflushing, pull a few shots—it may self-lubricate.If the squeak persists:Unplug, cool, and relieve pressure.For E61 groups: open the cam housing, clean and apply a thin film of food-safe silicone grease to the cam and followers; inspect/replace O-rings as needed.For steam/hot-water valves: remove knobs, service threads and O-rings, lubricate lightly, and reassemble.Test movement; the squeak should disappear.Safety Note: Surfaces can be hot and under pressure. Always work on a cool, depressurized machine and follow your model’s service guide.9) The “Dolphin” Sound (Rare)A high, warbling tone during extraction can come from a weakened E61 infusion chamber spring (or from a flow-control install that needs a stronger spring).Solution: Replace the infusion spring with the correct spec (often included in E61 service kits or available separately).Low hum (rotary) / chatter (vibe) → Normal pump behavior.Extra-loud frame resonance on new ECM/Profitec → Remove shipping bolt.Panel buzz/drip tray rattle → Realign panels; seat tray; pad contact points.Hiss + click on warm-up → Normal vacuum relief action.Rhythmic knock inside → Prime/fill the coffee boiler.High, hollow whine → Dry pump → restore water and prime now.Tap/ting from inside → Parts touching boiler/frame → reposition/insulate.Lever/valve squeak → Clean &amp; lubricate cam/threads; check O-rings.“Dolphin” tone → Replace E61 infusion spring (or upgrade for flow control).
