Rocket Espresso Appartamento: Heating Issues

If your Rocket Appartamento is not heating or is overheating, this guide explains the most common causes and the correct order to diagnose them. For a machine that is not heating, always start by resetting the high-limit thermostats, as a tripped high limit is the fastest and most common fix.For overheating issues, the pressurestat is the primary suspect, since it is the most frequent cause of uncontrolled heating. If you are uncertain or uncomfortable working around energized components, do not proceed with live voltage checks.Avoid shorts while testing: When measuring voltage, keep meter probes controlled and separated. Use a clean metal chassis point for ground, and avoid letting the probe touch multiple terminals at once.Hot water spill risk: If you replace the heating element, drain as much water from the boiler as possible first. Otherwise water can spill onto your counter and into the machine.Do not adjust sealed pressurestat: On newer pressurestats the adjustment is sealed. Do not attempt to change the setting. Turn the machine on and observe the green light.If the green light is flashing, the machine is indicating a different condition that can prevent heating. This article assumes the green light is solid.If the green light is solid and the machine is not heating, continue with the checks below.Turn the machine off and unplug it.Remove the top access so you can reach the components on top of the boiler. In the video, this is done by removing:A screw at the top (one side).A screw at the top (the other side).Two screws located down inside the reservoir area.Lift the top so the components are accessible. (In the video the full case is removed, but only top access is required for these checks.)Set your multimeter to continuity mode.Touch the meter leads together to confirm the meter beeps (verifying the meter and leads are working).Locate the two high-limit thermostats on top of the boiler.Insert the meter probes into the two spade connector jackets (one probe on each side of the high-limit).Listen for the continuity tone.If there is no tone, press the small reset button in the middle of the high-limit, then test again.If it still does not beep after pressing the reset, the high-limit is likely faulty and should be replaced.Repeat the same continuity and reset test for the second high-limit.Locate the pressurestat.With the machine off and cold, test for continuity across the pressurestat terminals as shown in the video.Confirm you have continuity when the machine is cold (it should be closed when calling for heat).Note: The video references older and newer pressurestat styles. On newer versions the adjustment screw may be sealed, and you should not attempt to adjust it.Locate the heating element terminals.Check for continuity across the two element legs (one probe on each terminal).Also confirm you do not have continuity between either element leg and ground (check from a leg to the element body or another grounded metal point). Continuity to ground indicates a fault.If the continuity checks above are all normal and the machine still does not heat, the next diagnosis step is live voltage testing.Plug the machine in and power it on.Be aware that the machine must still "think" it has water in the reservoir to call for heat. In the video, this is simulated by ensuring water is present so the reservoir sensing point has continuity.Set your multimeter to AC voltage.Measure voltage going into the pressurestat:Place one meter lead on the input side of the pressurestat.Place the other meter lead on a metal chassis ground point (a nearby metal tube/frame point works).You should read about 120 VAC (the video example reads about 118 VAC).Measure voltage coming out of the pressurestat the same way (output terminal to ground). You should again see about 120 VAC while the machine is calling for heat.If there is no voltage going into the pressurestat, move on to checking the control board connections.Turn the machine off and unplug it.Locate the control board bracket and remove/loosen the 7 mm bolt holding it (as shown in the video), then slide the bracket/board into a position where you can inspect the connectors.Find the black wire that routes to the pressurestat and locate its connector on the board (the video shows it terminating in a green connector).Push the connector firmly into place and ensure it is fully seated.Inspect for signs of arcing or overheating around the connector area (singeing, brown marks, or black marks).If everything is snug and correctly seated but you still have no power feeding the pressurestat, the board may be faulty and need replacement.If replacing the board, transfer connections one at a time to avoid mixing up connectors (the video notes a two-pin connector that could be plugged into the wrong location if you are not careful).Before replacing the board, confirm whether the heating element is actually receiving voltage.With the machine unplugged and powered off, disconnect the wires from the heating element terminals.Plug the machine back in.Set the meter to AC voltage.Turn the machine on and wait for the click indicating it is calling for heat.Place one meter probe into each of the two disconnected element wires (one probe per wire). You should read about 120 VAC across them.If proper voltage is present going to the element and the machine still is not heating, the heating element is the likely failure point.If the heating element is determined to be faulty, it can be replaced.There is a teflon gasket behind the element.Use a wrench to remove the element.Drain as much water from the boiler as possible before removal to minimize spilling.
