Profitec Pro 400: Relay Upgrade Kit Installation
This guide will assist you in upgrading the static relay in your Profitec Pro 400 PID espresso machine. Upgrading to a new relay can improve reliability and performance.
Technical Skills
Basic familiarity with tools and electrical connections is required.
Tools Needed
-
Allen wrench (included with kit)
-
Sharpie (optional, for marking screw locations)
Associated Parts
-
Static Relay Upgrade Kit (includes new static relay, double-sided heat transfer tape, Allen wrench, and wire ties)
Video Instructions
Below is a video outlining this process on the Pro 500. While it is a different machine, the process is extremely similar.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Preparation and Safety
-
Ensure your machine is unplugged and completely cooled down before beginning this procedure.
2. Removing the Housing
-
Remove the housing from your Profitec Pro 400 PID.
Note: This linked video demonstrates the process for the Pro 500, but the procedure is extremely similar for the Pro 400.

3. Removing the Reservoir Housing
-
Remove screws securing the reservoir housing.
(Optional Tip: Use a Sharpie to mark screw locations to simplify reassembly.) -
Disconnect wires from the reservoir sensor:
-
Remove one wire from the top connection.
-
Remove the other wire from the bottom connection.
-
4. Removing Old Static Relay
-
Locate the existing static relay (near the control box).
-
Using the provided Allen wrench, remove the relay mounting screw.
-
Disconnect the four wires from the existing relay.
-
Completely remove the old static relay from the machine.
5. Installing the New Static Relay
-
Note: You can connect the wires to the relay first or install the relay first. Do steps 5 and 6 in the order most convenient for your workflow.
-
The Pro 400 will not require the extra wire included in the kit, as you are not relocating the relay as you would in the Pro 500.
-
Prepare the new static relay by applying the provided double-sided heat transfer tape to the back of the relay.
-
New orientation for installation:
-
Remove the tape cover from the relay.
-
Carefully position the relay inside the machine against the side wall (image below).
-
Press firmly to secure it in place.
-
Important: Due to this new alignment, you will not use the previous nuts and bolts.
-
6. Connecting Wires to New Relay
-
Connect the wires securely in the following sequence:
-
Thick black wire → Terminal #1
-
Brown wires → Terminal #2
-
Thin black wire → Terminal #3
-
Red wires → Terminal #4
-
-
Double-check each connection to ensure they are secure and properly attached.
7. Securing Wires
-
Use the provided wire ties to neatly organize and secure the wires within your machine.
8. Reassemble Reservoir Holder
-
Reattach the reservoir housing to its original location.
-
Reconnect sensor wires to the reservoir sensor (wire order does not matter).
-
Secure the reservoir holder screws using your previously marked locations.
9. Final Checks and Startup
-
Inspect all connections thoroughly to ensure secure placement.
-
Replace the outer housing and secure all screws and fittings.
-
Once fully reassembled, plug in your Profitec Pro 400 PID and test its operation to confirm proper function.
