Varia VS4 Upper Burr Install and Calibration

This video walks you through removing the Varia VS4 upper burr assembly, taking it apart, and reinstalling it without cross-threading. You will also learn how to reinstall the collar correctly, tighten the screws evenly without over-tightening, confirm the adjustment range is correct, and recalibrate the grinder so your finest (zero) point is close to the "0" mark for easier dialing in.Beginner. This process uses a small Allen key and careful alignment, with low risk as long as the grinder is unplugged and you avoid cross-threading or over-tightening screws.1.5 mm Allen wrench (hex key)Locking ringUpper burrCollar (upper burr carrier/collar assembly)Three Allen screws (1.5 mm)Small metal ring (spacer ring) Turn the grinder off and unplug it before starting.Rotate the locking ring clockwise to unlock it.Slide the entire upper assembly straight out.Flip the removed assembly upside down.Use a 1.5 mm Allen wrench to fully remove the three Allen screws (they are long, so keep turning until they are completely free).Slide the bottom piece off.Locate the small metal ring (spacer ring) and keep track of it so it does not get lost.Unscrew the upper burr from the collar.Note: the threads are opposite of what many people expect. Turn it as if you are doing "righty tighty" to get it to loosen/unscrew.With the burr removed, clean and service as needed (for example, cleaning, or relubricating if appropriate for your maintenance routine).Before threading the burr back in, set the upper burr on top of the collar so the three "ears" rest evenly on the non-keyed surfaces (do not fully key it in yet).This even seating helps prevent cross-threading.With the burr resting evenly, rotate the adjustment side toward coarser by five full rotations.After five full rotations, lift the burr slightly, rotate it, and line it up so it keys in properly (including aligning the larger ear with the larger keyed area).Before installing screws, align the single hole on the moving piece with the middle position hole group on the other piece (this does not have to be perfectly calibrated yet, it is just to get it back together).Reinstall the three Allen screws.Tighten the screws evenly, a little at a time (similar to tightening lug nuts on a wheel), rather than fully tightening one screw at a time.Keep tightening until the visible gap closes, then stop when you feel resistance. Do not over-tighten.Insert the assembly back into the grinder.Align the larger notch with the larger tab in the grinder body.Lock the assembly back in place.Rotate the adjustment from the finest point to the coarsest point.You should be able to get about two full rotations from finest to coarsest. This is a quick check that nothing is cross-threaded.Note the number where the grinder hits its finest stopping point. This is your current "zero point" (example shown in the video was at 6).Turn the grinder to its finest position (tighten it as much as it will go).Unlock the collar again.Loosen and remove the three Allen screws again.Lift the assembly slightly. Do not rotate the collar setting during this calibration step.Use the large tab and the set of five lines in front of it as your guide. Try to align the middle line as close to the "0" mark as you can.Line up the holes again, reinstall the screws, and tighten until you feel resistance (do not over-tighten).Reinstall and lock the assembly back into the grinder, aligning the larger notch with the larger tab.Confirm you can go slightly past "0" (that is okay), and treat "0" as about as fine as you want to go.For a starting espresso setting, set the grinder around "2" as a reasonable first brew range.Reassemble any remaining components you removed, and you are ready to use the grinder.Unplug first: Always turn the grinder off and unplug it before removing the burr carrier or placing hands near the burrs.Avoid cross-threading: When reinstalling the upper burr, seat it evenly on the collar before threading. If it feels rough, tight, or misaligned, stop and restart to prevent thread damage.Do not over-tighten: Tighten the Allen screws only until the gap closes and you feel resistance. Over-tightening can strip threads or damage the assembly.Do not lose the spacer ring: Keep track of the small metal ring during disassembly so it is reinstalled correctly.
