Gaggia Brera: Basic Maintenance and Hardware

Learn how to maintain the drip tray, dreg drawer, and reservoir for the Gaggia Brera, as well as what some of the basic maintenance alerts means.For the reservoir, as well as the brew unit, we recommend using a bit of the food safe lubricant that came with your machine. Your brew unit should be pre-lubricated, but the reservoir may not be. Apply a bit of the lubricant to the valve in the back of the reservoir chamber pictured below.This will help in 3 Key Ways:Remove and install the reservoir more easilyKeep the reservoir or front panel from breaking due to difficulty removingCreate a better seal to help prevent leaks or air entering the systemThe reservoir makes a good, tight seal by design. The lubrication will help both with the reservoir moving it and out of the machine more easily as well as helping create a good seal. You may also find that gripping the reservoir towards the bottom will help when removing or replacing.Unlike the reservoir, there is no valve on the dreg drawer, meaning it will sit in the machine more loosely than the reservoir. If the dreg drawer does not seem to be sitting properly, check the tracks on the bottom of the drawer and inside your machine. Damage to these parts can result in the dreg drawer not fitting properly.The machine will alert you when it is time to empty the dreg drawer with the light in the top right corner of the screen.Light is solid when the drawer needs to be emptied and starts flashing after removed. This should begin after a few seconds.Be sure not to turn the machine off during the process. If the light does not go from steady to blinking, the machine will not know you have removed the dreg drawer. The warning is just based on an internal drink count the machine keeps meaning if the drawer is emptied before it is time, you may still get an alert when the machine thinks it is time. This can help clear minor jams.The larger the dot, the more coarse the grounds will be.Turn clockwise for more coarse and counter-clockwise for finer grinds.When adjusting the grinder, be sure to only adjust as it runs, or go one step at a time and allow for a grind before going further. This will help ensure beans do not get stuck between the burrs as they try to get closer.
