Overview
The Fellow Opus is a compact all-purpose conical burr coffee grinder that aims to make the profession of home-barista more affordable than ever. At just 8.3 inches wide and 10.6 inches tall, the grinder is incredibly compact and features Fellow’s trademark austere aesthetic with minimal interface elements. With simple push-and-play operation and accessories for brewed coffee and espresso the Opus is ready for action right out of the box.
Features and Performance
Unlike Fellow’s other grinders in the Ode series, the Opus uses a set of C6-40 Burly Burrs™ that turn at 350 RPM. The grinder features 41 stepped adjustments, but also allows for further refinement of your grind with a micro adjustment ring located inside the grinder around the circumference of the bottom burr. Grind range goes all the way from cold brew coarse to espresso fine (<200 microns) making the Opus suitable for all brew methods. Higher numbers indicate a coarser grind and lower vice versa. For easy reference, recommended grinding ranges by method are listed on the underside of the bean hopper lid.
Designed for single-dosing, the Opus uses a simple system of timed-grinding with 1, 2, and 3 presses of the start button giving you 30, 60, and 90 seconds of grinding respectively and a max of 2 minutes by pressing and holding the button. The Opus also features a built-in auto shutoff that stops the motor once all of the coffee has been ground regardless of the time remaining. For easy dosing, the hopper lid is designed for volumetric dosing and the Opus can be loaded with up to 110g of coffee for a single grinding cycle. The Opus also features anti-static construction to eliminate mess and further reduce coffee retention.
Finishing touches include the variable grounds catch bin which features a shaped inner wall that forms a spout for easy pouring and a portafilter attachment for traditional grind and flip dosing. The base also attaches magnetically to the base beneath the grinds chute which feels both secure and satisfying. For maintenance, the bean hopper twists off with ease and a collapsible handle allows the top burr to be removed in seconds with no screws or assemblies to contend with.
Why You Should Get It
Fellow is helping to redefine entry-level grinding with the Opus by combining performance with a very low barrier to entry pricewise. Compact and incredibly simple to operate, this is an easy grinder to integrate into your routine and your kitchen. If you’re brewing on a budget or new to specialty coffee or single-dosing the Opus is a great choice and its wide range of grinds and precision adjustments will keep pace as you refine your technique.
