If you are able to get steam flow, but no brew flow, the solenoid valve is the likely culprit. This is a valve that is connected directly to the boiler. Be sure to try the brew flow without the portafilter attached. You're looking for 6oz of water to be dispensed in about 20 seconds. If the flow is significantly slower than that without the portafilter in place, it will likely be the solenoid valve. You should be descaling the machine, monthly. If you haven't been doing so, the valve can become clogged. You can remove and clean the valve, resolving the issue.

Before addressing the Solenoid Valve directly:

  • If you have no brew flow AND no steam flow, you may have a pump or priming issue.
    • If you have steam flow but NO brew flow, that will almost surely be a clogged solenoid. LIGHT or LOW flow without the portafilter may also mean a grouphead clog.
    • Try running some water from the wand and click the brew button on and off a few times. This can potentially clear a clog with very little effort.
  • If cleaning the solenoid valve DOES resolve the issue, it MAY still become clogged again if you have additional scale still in the boiler.
    • If you fear this may be the case, you may want to skip straight to Direct Boiler Cleaning and THEN clearing your solenoid.
    • Backflushing and Descaling are basically the automated/fully assembled versions of this cleaning, so feel free to give either or both a try before the solenoid.

How To: Remove and replace the Solenoid Valve

Please Note: Both videos go over the same process, so feel free to use whichever one you prefer. Ted and Marc use slightly different methods, but Marc manages it with a broken arm, so it MUST be easy to do!

How To: Manually clear a clogged Solenoid Valve:

  • The pathways are narrow so you may not see any actual clog
    • Check the airflow through the holes indicated
    • Air compressors work the best, but a paperclip and flashlight will work in a pinch
    • Scale does not generally develop in the solenoid itself. It breaks free from inside the boiler and gets lodged as it tries to pass through the pathways.
  • After reassembly, test the mechanism by holding up some ferrous metal (or something that would be attracted to a magnet) to the valve in your machine.
    • Run some water through your wand and flip the brew and steam switches on and off alternatingly.
    • You should feel that magnet in the solenoid engage and disengage as you go between the steam and brew sides.
    • Solenoid FAILURE (rather than clogging) is very rare. If you do not feel the magnetism, double check your wiring.
  • The flow was restored, but only temporarily.
    • If the flow works but then stops or slows again, the boiler will need to be addressed directly as mentioned above.
    • If the flow was NOT restored, but you do have magnetism, try clearing again or proceed to the boiler cleaning.

Please note: The process will be the same for all versions of the Gaggia Classic/Pro/EVO/E24. Check out the parts diagram for your machine to help you out:
