Your machine's pump is set to work at a set pressure. As such, if there is any aspect of the coffee that impedes water flow more so than the machine is designed for, it can prevent sufficient water from making it through the puck. Some of the most important factors for brew flow (and pump resistance) are listed below. Any rules you find about coffee measurements and ratios are ALWAYS meant to be taken as guidance and not gospel. 2:1 Timing or Weight Ratios will always vary from machine to machine and coffee to coffee. Coffee is an organic material meaning it is still degassing in your home! As rude as that sounds, it's a normal part of the process, and a very good reason to stay on top of all of those variables! The best idea is to just change one variable at a time so you can see what kind of effect it is having. Ultimately there's only one rule you need: if it tastes good, you did it!
